“เมื่อ 4 ปีที่แล้ว (พศ. 2559-2560) ตอนนั้นมีตําแหน่งเป็น​
ที่ปรึกษากรรมาธิการอนุรักษ์ฯ ได้เสนอให้สมาคมสถาปนิก
สยามฯ ทําโครงการเก็บข้อมูลเบื้องต้นอาคารควรค่าแก่การ
อนุรักษ์ในพื้นที่นี้ โดยมี อ.ปริญญา ชูแก้ว เป็นผู้รวบรวมข้อมูล​
แต่เมื่อเราเข้าไปเห็นข้างใน ก็พบว่าไม่ได้มีเพียงแค่ตัวอาคาร
เท่านั้น แต่ยังมีเครื่องมือเครื่องใช้ที่บอกเล่าเรื่องราวได้อย่าง
ทรงคุณค่า แต่ละชิ้นมีความเป็น museum piece อย่างเต็ม
ตัว แถมยังใช้งานได้ รวมไปถึงองค์ความรู้ในการซ่อมบํารุงที่
ทําต่อเนื่องมา เมื่อก่อนโรงงานนี้สร้างรถไฟเองได้นอกจากนี้​
ยังมีมรดกต้นไม้ใหญ่ซึ่งเป็นมรดกทางธรรมชาติอีกจ ํานวนมาก”​
อาจารย์ปองขวัญกล่าว และในเดือนตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2561​
เราได้มีโอกาสเป็นประธานจัดงานสัมมนาวิชาการนานาชาติ
ว่าด้วยมรดกสถาปัตยกรรมโมเดิร์นในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ​
mASEANa จัดโดย Docomomo Japan, Japan Foundation​
ร่วมจัดโดย Docomomo International, ICOMOS International​
20th Century Heritage Scientific Committee และสมาคม​
อิโคโมสไทยเป็นเจ้าภาพฝ่ายไทย ในวันสุดท้ายของงานได้มี
การพานักวิชาการนานาชาติที่เข้าร่วมประชุมเข้าทัศนศึกษา
ในโรงงานมักกะสันซึ่งถือเป็นมรดกสถาปัตยกรรมโมเดิร์น​
ที่มีความสําคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์การปฏิวัติอุตสาหกรรมใน
ประเทศไทย และเป็นแห่งเเรกในเเถบเอเชียแปซิฟิก ในการ
เข้าชมและแลกเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้ทางวิชาการระดับโลกทําให้​
เกิดมุมมองที่ว่า หากเรามีการพัฒนาพื้นที่ในเชิงอนุรักษ์ที่ดี
มักกะสันมีศักยภาพไปสู่ความเป็นมรดกโลกได้ จึงเกิดเป็น
แรงบันดาลใจให้ต้องมาเริ่มทําการเก็บข้อมูลอย่างจริงจัง​
และเป็นระบบ โดยตั้งโครงการชื่อว่า Makkasan Heritage
Documentation ขับเคลื่อนโดยกลุ่ม Urban Heritage
Network ที่ตั้งขึ้นมาเพื่อเป็นตัวกลางประสานงานให้เกิดการ
จัดทําข้อมูลในทุกรูปแบบ และมีผลให้คนในโรงงานเริ่มเห็น
คุณค่าความสําคัญของทุกสิ่งในโรงงานมักกะสัน
การเริ่มเข้าไปทํางานเก็บข้อมูลสร้างกระเเสการเห็นคุณค่า
และการมีส่วนร่วมในการรักหวงแหน และภาคภูมิใจกับมรดก​
ในมักกะสัน ทางเครือข่ายร่วมกับกลุ่มบิ๊กทรีทําการสํารวจ
ต้นไม้เบื้องต้นและมีการปักหมุดต้นไม้ใหญ่ในโรงงานมักกะสัน​
ทําให้เกิดกระเเสความต้องการที่จะปกป้องต้นไม้ใหญ่ในพื้นที่ ​
วันที่ 26 มิถุนายน 2561 ในงานฉลองครบรอบ 109 ปี
โรงงาน ทางผู้บริหารและสหภาพแรงงานรถไฟได้จัดพิธีบวช
ต้นไม้ใหญ่ในมักกะสัน ทั้งนี้พวกเขาไม่ได้คัดค้านการพัฒนา
พื้นที่ แต่การพัฒนาไม่ควรทําให้สิ่งที่มีคุณค่าหายไป

“Four years ago (2016-2017), when I was the advisor
of the conservation committee, I had proposed for
ASA to lead a project to document the details of
the valuable buildings on the site.” Professor Parinya
Chukeaw helped consolidate the documents for
the project. “However, once we got on site, we found
that not only the buildings, but the tools and
equipment also had historical significance. Each
item had the quality of a museum piece and was
still in use. The knowledge and the know-how of
train reparation that still existed was extensive
to the point that whole trains could be built at the
factory back in the old days. Additionally, ancient
trees in the area were also outstanding natural
heritage,” shared Professor Pongkwan. In October
2018, Thailand hosted the mASEANa (Modern ASEAN
Architecture) International Conference, which
was sponsored by Docomomo Japan, the Japan
Foundation, Docomomo International, ICOMOS
International 20th Century Heritage Scientific
Committee, and ICOMOS Thailand. On the last day
of the conference, the project had led international
academics on an excursion to the site of the factory.
The discussion following the excursion concluded
that the district of Makkasan had the potential to
become a World Heritage Site, provided that systematic
conservation and development was in place. The
factory was considered a modern architectural
heritage that was significant to the industrial revolution
of Thailand and the first in the Asia-Pacific region.
This launched the initiative to collect and document
data on the factory—the “Makkasan Heritage
Documentation” project. The project was run by
the Urban Heritage Network, a group created to
support and coordinate on all types of documentation.
The initiative also helped the factory staff learn
more about the historical values of their workplace.

เมื่อเดือนสิงหาคม 2560 เครือข่าย Vernadoc นําโดย
ผศ.สุดจิต สนั่นไหว นําทีมนักศึกษาคณะสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์
ม.รังสิต และสถาบันอาศรมศิลป์ เข้าเก็บข้อมูลมรดก
สถาปัตยกรรมด้วยวิธี Vernadoc ของโรงงาน 5 หลัง​
ในมักกะสัน และมีการจัดนิทรรศการให้คนในโรงงานเข้าชม
เป็นที่สนใจและสร้างความภาคภูมิใจให้คนในโรงงานอย่างมาก
นอกจากนี้การเห็นคุณค่าร่วมกันของคนในโรงงานและภาค
ประชาสังคม ยังทําให้เกิดความร่วมมือที่เห็นเป็นรูปธรรมเช่น​
โครงการซ่อมประตูไม้ อาคาร 2465 ที่สมาคมสถาปนิก
สยามฯ เคยให้รางวัลไว้ และกรมศิลปากรได้มาสํารวจและ
ระบุคุณค่าไว้เป็นอาคารที่มีคุณค่าเป็นโบราณสถาน แม้จะ
ยังไม่ได้มาขึ้นทะเบียน แต่ได้ออกจดหมายมาถึงการรถไฟ
แห่งประเทศไทยว่าจะดําเนินการอะไรต้องแจ้งไปทางกรมศิลป์ ​
ก่อน ในการนี้เมื่อจะต้องมีการซ่อมประตูทางเครือข่ายมรดก​
เมืองก็เป็นธุระจัดหาผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านงานไม้เเบบโบราณ คือ
อ.สันทัน เวียงสิมา ที่อาสาสมัครมาถอดแบบประตูโบราณนี้
ให้ทางช่างไม้ของโรงงานทําการซ่อมให้ถูกวิธี โดยมีคุณวสุ
โปษยะนันทน์ จากกรมศิลปากรมาให้คําปรึกษาในการดําเนิน​
งานด้วย งานภาคปฏิบัติอีกงานหนึ่งคือการตัดแต่งต้นไม้ใหญ่ ​
The documentation project increased public
awareness towards conservation, participation,
and ownership of the Makkasan heritage. BIGTrees
Project joined the Urban Heritage Network in the
study of the site and tree cataloging, driving an initiative
to conserve ancient trees in the area. On 26 June
2018, the authority of the Railway of Thailand held
an event on the site to celebrate the 109th anniversary
of the Makkasan Factory and to bless the ancient
trees in the area. They were not opposed to development,
but they stressed that the values and history
should be actively preserved.
In August 2018, the Vernadoc network, led by
Assistant Professor Sudjit Sananwai with students
from the Faculty of Architecture at Rangsit University
and Arsom Silp Institute of the Arts, sought to
collect and document the data of the architectural
heritage using the Vernadoc methodology. All five
factory houses in Makkasan had been covered, and
