เมื่อเราลองจินตนาการภาพในความทรงจําหรือภาพจาก
ประสบการณ์ของแต่ละคนไปพร้อมกัน นึกถึงบรรยากาศ
ภาพของผนังที่ถูกฉาบด้วยแสงไฟสีส้มแดง คละคลุ้งไป
ด้วยควันบุหรี่ แก้วเหล้า และการแลกเปลี่ยนบทสนทนา
บนความเหงาของคนแปลกหน้า ความเป็นสถานที่ ตรอก​
มุม ซอย ที่ตัวละครปรากฏตัวอย่างซ่อนเร้น และเปิดเผย​
ในขณะเดียวกัน ลําดับการเล่าเรื่องที่ไม่ใช่ระบบเส้นตรง​
(non-linear narrative) ซึ่งเปรียบได้กับระบบการเข้าถึง
และทางสัญจรซึ่งเป็นลักษณะเฉพาะของสถานที่แอบซ่อน​
เหล่านี้ ดั่งฉากในอารมณ์ทํานองเดียวกับภาพยนตร์ใน
ช่วงปี 1990s ของผู้กํากับหนังชาวจีน นามว่า หว่องกาไว​

Looking back into our collective memories or life
experiences, we can imagine a scene of walls
bathed with a reddish-orange incandescent light,
cigarette smoke filling the air as glasses of ice-cold
alcoholic drinks keep conversations between
lonely strangers flowing; a sense of place visible
to both the eyes and the mind, with small alleyways,
dark corners, and side streets containing enigmatic
characters who appear and disappear from view.
The system of circulation and the idea of accessing
hidden places are reminiscent of Wong Kar-wai’s
movies from the 1990s.

ในอดีตแสดงบทบาทเป็น sex motel หรือโรงแรมม่านรูด​
ที่เคยเปิดบริการมากว่า 30 ปี ในปัจจุบันบทบาทดังกล่าว​
ถูกเปลี่ยนไปอย่างสิ้นเชิงโดย CHAT LAB / CHAT
Architects ที่เข้ามาสร้างแนวทางใหม่ให้กับ Samsen​
STREET Hotel โดยมีการต่อยอดทางความคิดมาจาก
งานวิจัยที่ชื่อ “BANGKOK BASTARDS” ซึ่งเป็นผลลัพธ์
มาจากการสํารวจ เก็บข้อมูล และรวบรวมผลจากการ
วิเคราะห์มากกว่า 5 ปี ในประเด็นที่เกี่ยวกับเนื้อหา​
ทางสถาปัตยกรรมที่แสดงออกและสะท้อนถึงวิถีชีวิตและ
ความเป็นอยู่แบบไทยในมิติทางสังคมของความไม่เป็น
ทางการ ความพเนจร ความชั่วคราว ความง่ายที่แยบยล
ความซื่อที่ชํ่ำชอง ขณะเดียวกันก็ซ่อนความขําขันไว้ให้
ฉุกคิด เช่น รถเข็นของขายริมถนน เพิงพักชั่วคราวริมทาง​
ที่พักคนงานก่อสร้าง การใช้ประโยชน์จากส่วนยื่นของ
โครงสร้างชั่วคราวนั่งร้านตอบสนองกิจกรรมการอยู่ ​
การดื่ม-กินร่วมกัน และในหน้าที่ขององค์ประกอบทาง
สถาปัตยกรรมทางกายภาพ เช่น การบังแดด และการ
กันฝน เป็นต้น หรือทางด้านความหมายที่แสดงออกมา
ทางกายภาพ เช่น การแทรกซึมและการปรากฏกาย​
ผ่านลักษณะของอาคารประเภทโรงแรมม่านรูด (The
curtain sex motel typology) ซึ่งเป็นประเภทอาคารที่
มักไม่ถูกกล่าวถึง หรือเป็นประเด็นที่ไม่ถูกนํามาคิดต่อยอด​
อาจเพราะท่าทีของประเภทอาคารที่อยู่ในสังคมแบบ
“underground” โดยมีลักษณะเฉพาะหลายอย่างที่น่าสนใจ​
ในเนื้อหาทางสถาปัตยกรรม เช่น ลําดับการเข้าถึง (spatial​
sequence) ที่คน 2 คนโดยสารรถยนต์ที่ติดฟิล์มป้องกัน​
การมองเห็น เข้ามายังพื้นที่โล่งตรงกลางแล้วแยกเข้าไป
ยังช่องจอดรถของตัวเอง และมีการปิดกั้นการมองเห็น
จากคนภายนอก ด้วยแนวเส้นม่านสีแดง (หรือฟ้าและเขียว)​
โดยอัตโนมัติ และเชื่อมต่อไปยังห้องพักอย่างแนบเนียน
Anyone who has had the chance to pass by the
Samsen Soi 6 neighborhood would likely have been
struck by a building with exposed concrete surfaces
and a green steel structure. Looking more like an
addition than a proper building, the structure gives
a simultaneous sense of permanence and temporality.
Those who are familiar with the area would know
what the establishment was once known for—having
operated for over thirty years as a sex motel, the
building has now been given a new role. Thanks to
CHAT LAB / CHAT Architects, the Samsen STREET
Hotel originated from the studio’s research project
“BANGKOK BASTARDS.” Over the course of five
years, the research explores, collects, and analyzes
data related to the architectural characteristics and
developments that reflect the makeshift aspects
of Thai society and its way of life—the wandering
ephemerality, the witty simplicity, and the gimmicky
honesty that are sometimes amusing and always
thoughtful that can be found in the inventiveness
of street kiosks, shelters, construction worker camps,
and scaffolding structures that accommodate
temporary habitation. The research also looks into
the practical roles of these architectural components
such as rain and sun protection as well as alternative
interpretations of the curtain sex motel typology—
the type of building whose existence is often left
unmentioned or overlooked and is never discussed
or developed.
These buildings typically have an ‘underground’
connotation, and the architecture has several
interesting characteristics. The spatial sequence,
which often involves two people (usually in cars
with tinted windows to prevent their identities from
being revealed) driving into the open ground at
the middle of the site, later leads into a unit with
its own individual parking space. Everything takes
place with a row of red (or blue or green) curtains
pulled closed (usually automatically) to prevent visual
access from outsiders as hotel guests are led directly
from their cars to their motel rooms.
