First and foremost. I wish to thank my supervisor Dr. Jean Snook for her kind<br />
encouragement and always constructive and helpful comments. Her love <strong>of</strong> literature is<br />
infectious. I also would like to thank the entire Gennan Department at <strong>Memorial</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Newfoundland</strong>. faculty and staff. for providing a supportive environment<br />
for my studies, especially Head <strong>of</strong> this Department. Dr. Erwin Warkentin. who brought<br />
the Gennan M.A. programme at <strong>Memorial</strong> back to life. Research work can only be as<br />
