Dieser Kurs diskutiert neuere Literatur zur Prosodie und Intonation. Unter anderem wird diskutiert,
wie Intonation wahrgenommen wird, welche funktionale Bedeutung sie hat und wie sich Dialekte
diesbezüglich unterscheiden. Einen weiteren Themenschwerpunkt bildet der Erwerb der
Sprachmelodie.

Diachronic survey of the inflectional morphology of Germanic (nominal, adjectival, pronominal,
verbal), with an emphasis of what has been (i) inherited, (ii) lost, (iii) innovated from Common
Germanic. Context: Universals of inflectional systems; principles of morphological change.
Voraussetzung: Morphology I and preferably II; some familiarity with the history of Germanic.

This seminar investigates the pragmatic properties (felicity conditions and/or contextual
restrictions) of several constructions involving focal stress, including question-answer congruence
in discourse, focus association with adverbs of quantification and with scalar particles, cleft
sentences, focus preposing, etc. Central to the seminar will be questions about: (i) focus projection
(from phonological prominence to marking of syntactic constituents), (ii) focus-marking vs. givenmarking,
(iii) in-situ vs. movement approaches to focus, (iv) direct vs. indirect association with
focus, and (v) implicatures and other pragmatic effects related to focus.
