This course studies in detail theoretical frameworks that provide alternative explanations about
how human children acquire grammatical knowledge. It examines syntactic, morphological and
phonological examples of first language research. The course explores the possible role of
Universal Grammar in first language acquisition and compares this approach with usage-based
theories of language acquisition.

Psycholinguistic Aspects of Bilingualism Barış Kabak

This course explores various aspects of bilingualism from a psycholinguistic perspective. We will
study a wide range of issues central to the understanding of the complex nature of the bilingual
mind and how the multi-language user represents and processes linguistic information. A selection
of key classic articles on the study of bilingualism will be discussed under the following headings:
(i) early bilingual development, (ii) age effects and the critical period, (iii) bilingual language
processing (e.g., phonological and morphosyntactic processing), and (iv) the cognitive effects of
bilingualism (e.g., the relationship between bilingualism and intelligence, attention, and
communicative skills).
Literatur: The readings will primarily be drawn from different sources and will be made available
on ILIAS.

Das Kolloquium ist gedacht für diejenigen Studierenden (MA-Sprachwissenschaft mit
anglistischem Schwerpunkt, Lehramt Englisch und Diplom Wirtschaftspädagogik Englisch), welche
im Herbst 2011 MA-Examen oder Staatsexamen im Fach Englisch machen werden. Es werden
Themen besprochen, welche für die mündliche Prüfung im Herbst 2011 relevant sind. Es werden
aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse aus den Bereichen Phonetik, Phonologie, Morphologie, Syntax,
Erst- und Zweitspracherwerb diskutiert und ausgewertet. Weiterhin werden Themen behandelt wie:
Struktur und Aufbau einer Masterarbeit, Vorbereitung auf mündliche Prüfungen, Erstellen von
professionellen Handouts und Powerpointpräsentationen.
