This seminar investigates the pragmatic properties (felicity conditions and/or contextual
restrictions) of several constructions involving focal stress, including question-answer congruence
in discourse, focus association with adverbs of quantification and with scalar particles, cleft
sentences, focus preposing, etc. Central to the seminar will be questions about: (i) focus projection
(from phonological prominence to marking of syntactic constituents), (ii) focus-marking vs. givenmarking,
(iii) in-situ vs. movement approaches to focus, (iv) direct vs. indirect association with
focus, and (v) implicatures and other pragmatic effects related to focus.

This course will acquaint students with the questions and methodology of experimental phonology.
Experimental phonology employs the techniques of experimental phonetics to test phonological
hypotheses about speech production and perception. The formulation of experimental questions,
the design of phonological experiments and the use of acoustic and perceptual methods will be the
main topics covered in this course.

This course studies in detail theoretical frameworks that provide alternative explanations about
how human children acquire grammatical knowledge. It examines syntactic, morphological and
phonological examples of first language research. The course explores the possible role of
Universal Grammar in first language acquisition and compares this approach with usage-based
theories of language acquisition.
