This course introduces students to the phonology of (some varieties of) Present-day English.<br />
We will focus on the phoneme inventory of the English language (and on how to identify and<br />
characterise phonemes), on phonological rules, syllable structure, connected speech<br />
processes, as well as some other aspects of the phonology of English.<br />

This course introduces basic concepts of syntax: a. categories and subcategories, b. syntactic<br />
constituents and tree representations, c. the notion of movement and syntactic derivations, as well<br />
as representational models of syntactic description. The theoretical perspective will be<br />
comparative, exposing approaches from three syntactic frameworks, i.e. Minimalism, HPSG, and<br />
LFG.<br />

Linguistic morphology deals with the internal structure of words, i.e. with the smallest linguistic<br />
signs (morphemes) and their combination in words. We will be studying inflectional morphology,<br />
i.e. the production of grammatical word-forms, and lexical morphology, i.e. the production of new<br />
lexemes in English. Our focus will be on present-day English but historical aspects of English<br />
morphology will also be discussed.<br />
