In this seminar, different concepts and contexts of multilingualism will be introduced and discussed.<br />
We will examine different acquisition scenarios such as early bilingual language acquisition or<br />
second language acquisition in children and adults. An overview will be provided over cognitive<br />
and neural processes involved in multilingual processing, the effect of speaking two or more<br />
languages on different linguistic and non-linguistic levels, factors influencing language<br />
competence, language disorders in multilingual individuals, and multilingualism and society.<br />

In this course, we will study the structure and socio-cultural history of American English (AE) from<br />
the colonial period to the present. Topics include (i) regional and social varieties in the USA, (ii)<br />
how the media, technology, and social trends shape AE, (iii) AE vocabulary, “Americanisms”, and<br />
metaphors, (iv) spoken interaction and pragmatic aspects of AE (e.g., politeness and political<br />
correctness), and (v) language politics in the USA.<br />

Kompetente maschinelle Übersetzung ist ein früh gestecktes Ziel der Computerlinguistik, das bis<br />
jetzt noch nicht erreicht wurde. Es gibt inzwischen Online-Systeme (z.B. Babel Fish, Google-<br />
Übersetzer), wie auch kommerziell erhältliche Systeme, deren Ausgabe zwar die Idee vermitteln<br />
kann, von was ein fremdsprachlicher Textes grob handelt (das sog. 'Gisting'), aber oft<br />
ungrammatisch bleibt und manchmal auch irreführend ist.<br />
In diesem Seminar werden Grundsätze der maschinellen Übersetzung vermittelt und klassische<br />
Systeme und Probleme eingeführt und diskutiert. Ein Resultat des Seminars sollte ein Verständnis<br />
