We are proud of our basketball and every boy wants to be as good as Lithuanian basketball stars like Sabonis,Kleiza, Siskauskas etc. So we have a good situation in the youth basketball. One of the better signs is the revival of football in Lithuania. We don’t have a good football team but somehowwe managed to attract youngsters to football pitches. We have good U-16, U-15 national teams and I’m surethat in a couple of years we will play in the World Cup or European championship. The worst situation is in other kinds of sport, because all the youngsters see is basketball and football ,so theydon’t like other sports. As a result we don’t have strong a handball, volleyball or ice hockey team.To end with, I want to say that Lithuania is a country that loves sport. Some people say that basketball is thesecond religion of Lithuania, football is a fast growing sport in Lithuania and I’m sure that we have to continueour traditions of sport and we can’t forget them. What can be better than sport? It’s the main source of healthand the healthy youth is the best youth.posted on Wednesday, March 14th, 2012A sound mind in a sound bodyby Martynas JAKAS (1996), SPG Šilutė/LithuaniaBefore we start, consider yourselves warned: this article is not about every single human on this planet.A sound mindMost people cherish their mind. Our mind is special for its use. Having a sound mind means: solving ourproblems with less obstacles, finding the light side in worst situations… Since having a sound mind means thatwe can think more clearly. If we would think that our mind is worthless, we wouldn’t cherish it and we wouldonly trust our feelings. We could believe anything that people say, we would lock ourselves in our little worlds, because if someone would lie to us, maybe everyone else could, so we couldn’t trust others. If our feelings wouldcontrol us, we would see only black and white in our world.A sound bodyThese days there are people ignoring the healthy life and those, who live healthy. Unhealthy life is very commonthese days, because lots of junk food is sold and eaten every day, new ones created every month. Newtechnologies help to sat unhealthy, too I’m not against mobile phones, TVs, computers, but that’s true. We don’talways go out to meet friends, because we have computers, we don’t need to stay outside for a long time to chat– we have mobile phones. These things make us lazier, that’s why we move less and eat unhealthy. So let’s open a new page in our lives and start thinking more clearly and living more healthy. Just don’t give up!posted on Sunday, March 4th, 2012Food and healthby Laura SALDAUSKAITĖ (1996), SPG Šilutė/LithuaniaIn today‘s fast-moving world, people have less and less time to spend eating, let alone cooking. It is probably for this reason that junk food has becomeso popular, and there is no doubt that it is here to stay. In fact, one Britishhotel group has announced that its guests are able to order fast food eventhrough room service. So what exactly is junk food? Basically, it is anythingthat is high in calories but lacking in nutrition as well as high in saturatedfat, which is linked with a higher risk of cancer. Our eating habits havechanged due to lack of time. Also, the amount of exercise we do hasdecreased. Researches suggest that the new generation will be more likely tosuffer from heart and liver disease. But if we improve our eating habits, wewill be better equipped to deal with our stressful lifestyles. One of the ways to stay healthy is the Pyramid diet. We‘ve had the High Fibre diet, the Protein diet, the hip diet, but the latestdiet is The Pyramid‘s.This isn‘t a diet to help people lose weight. It‘s a dietfor healthy life. The Pyramid diet is very simple. Different kinds of food are atdifferent levels of the pyramid. The higher up the pyramid, the less you should eat.At the bottom of the pyramid are complex carbohydrates like bread, pasta and potatoes. About 50% of your dietshould be complex by them. At the second level are fruit and vegetables. Thes should be about 30% of your diet.Above the second level are the protein-rich foods like meat, fish and cheese. At the top of the pyramid are fat,oil and sugar. We should eat as little as possible of things at this level. So that’s why, the proverb says: “An apple a day, keeps a doctor away”.posted on Monday, May 14 th, 2012n° 9/2013, page 119
Eating Disorders: Anorexia and Bulimiaby Mintare NORKUTĖ (1996), SPG Silute/LithuaniaEveryone feels dissatisfied with their appearancesometimes and then tries to change it. We compareourselves with friends, brothers or sisters, and even getangry, because we are shorter, fuller or maybe not aspretty as they are. However, it’s not bad to be different.Everyone is different – our height and appearancedepends on body composition, genetic and not thequantity of food we consume. Psychologists say thatpeople have created images of how they want to look(influenced by fashion trends and friends) and they tryto get closer to these ideals. They compare themselveswith models on the covers of famous magazines, getdissapointed and start to worry about their overweight – no matter if they have it or not. People with a normalbody weight are very different and models on the covers are just one of the examples of how you can look. Ifyou are worried about your weight and wondering what is the normal weight of your age, you can talk about itwith your doctor, school counselor or a social worker.A normal development of a young person’s body requires healthy food containing all the necessary components:proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Abstinence from substances that allegedly make youfat (e.g. avoiding food containing carbohydrates or fat) can stop your body from normal development. So, what causes eating disorders?Difficulties in school, bullying, fights withfamily and friends, a need to have a perfect body can cause stress andanxiety. Some people start to eat more just to facilitate those feelings. In fact, eating can make you feel betterfor a while, but after that the worry about your weight kicks in. In this situation it’s easier for a person toobserve how his body is changing rather than to find the problem that caused eating for calming down. That’show eating disorders develop. What are eating disorders? Many people who trie to lose some weight go on diets or exercise a lot. Some of them worry about overweight somuch, that losing weight becomes the most important thing in the world and then turn into an eating disorder.Usually people get eating disorders after longer or shorter diets. The most common eating disorders are AnorexiaNervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.Anorexia NervosaAnorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder when a person weighing much less than needed, still feels thickand wants to lose even more weight. Even a starving person still reduces the amount of food he or she eats. The signs and symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa:A person thinks that he or she is too fat so they avoid eating, though, his weight are normal or even less thannormal; The amount of food is reduced, a person always counts calories and lost kilos, avoids food that “Makes him fat”;The weight is low, a person is lean and starving, but it seems to him that he’s only gaining more weight; He likes to eat alone, prepares food in a special way, eats at the right time and tries to keep up with his made upeating rules; If a person is forced to eat he hides the meal (in his room or clothes);A person looks very active, exercises a lot;For girls – their menstrual period can disappear.A person suffering from Anorexia may be satisfied with the ability to control his bodyweight, doesn’t feelthe hunger, can be very active, agile, be a good student, participate in various societies. However, agradual decrease in body weight cause weakness, affects learning, a person starts to avoid contacts with hisfriends.Bulimia NerviosaBulimia Nervosa — an eating disorder with the constant overeating, followed by induced vomiting or use oflaxative drugs. People afflicted with Bulimia eat a lot and very fast.Bulimia is when:Overeating is followed by starvation and a period of intensive sport;A person after period of overeating sees himself fat and feels guilt and shame;A person tries to cause vomiting or uses laxative drugs to get rid of food eaten (usually because the weight doesnot change and remains as it was) .If a person doesn’t eat for a long time, then he is starving. After starving he feels very hungry. A person withBulimia eats a lot of food in a short time. It can’t be mixed with a little overeating. Some people can have both Anorexia and Bulimia symptoms. Both eating disorders are more common with girls, but boys can have them too.About diet pillsToday, we are often faced with ads that promise us fast underweighting. But it does more harm than good.Intensive diets do not help to reduce weight. After a while the weight is usually reversible and are the sameor even higher;n° 9/2013, page 120
