Growing up: ready to take the risk?by Maria ANSIDERI (1993), LSP Assisi/ItalyI attend the last year of secondary school and I will have totake my exams in July. We call these exams MATURITÀ whichmeans maturity. This final test has this name because thestudent involved is supposed to be responsible by now, andafter the exams he will have his future before him, and willhave to take one of the most important choices of his life.In September I will have to choose what I will study atuniversity and this choice is very difficult!Perugia is an important university city where people from allparts of Italy come to attend courses. The most importantFaculties in Perugia are Law and Medicine, but there are manymore too. We also have the university for foreign studentswhich attracts people from different countries.Photo taken from www.morguefile.comBut the course that I would like to attend, oriental languages, is not in Perugia. If I go out of Umbria, myregion, I will have to be sure that I’m making the right choice and be ready to leave my family and friends. If Imake this choice I will have to be very responsible because I will have to live alone and organize my life withoutmy parents’ help.I think it will be an important way to grow up, full of responsibility, but it will also be a way to understand whatI really want in my life. I think that all the students of my age in the last year of school find themselves indifficulty when faced with the question: “What do you want to do after school? What will you study atuniversity?”The answer is not easy because a person of 19 or 20 is not sure yet of who he is and of what he wants. A lot ofpeople think “I want to do this university because I like it and it is what I want to do” but there is also thepossibility that something won’t go as planned, and at this point it becomes a problem because even if youbelieve completely in what you are doing, you may fail. The question is this: How much am I willing to risk?posted on Sunday, March 9th 2013by Anna MACHNIK (1995), 8LO Kraków/PolandMarch 17, 2013 at 7:20 pmI completely agree with you. Deciding what you want to do in your future means taking a huge risk. In mycountry for instance, teenagers who start their high schools are obliged to choose the profile of the class in whichthey will expand their knowledge in specific subjects (it will help them to pass their final exams called ‘Matura’ atthe end of high school which are necessary when you try to get to university). So, it means that at that point oflife (16 years old) they have to know what they will be doing in their life. It’s a hard decision to make, believeme. Many people make a good decision but those who choose a wrong profile may later suffer from it.by Katarzyna SIERADZKA (1995), 8LO Kraków/PolandMarch 19, 2013 at 7:53 amI think that a lot of people in our age have similar concerns. I will be writing my matura exam(at the end of highschool) and I have to choose what subjects. Of this exams depends on what college i get to. This is a verydifficult choice because I have to decide about my future life, what i want to study and where I want to work, soi understand your doubts and concerns. The great recession… why do we have this problem?by Massimiliano DELLA PORTA (1994), LSP Assisi/ItalyPhoto taken from www.attualissimo.itOne of the most important events that are changing the worldat the moment is the great recession. It started in 2008 afterthe American financial crisis of 2007. Because of globalizationthe problem spread around the world in a very short time, particularly harming Europe.Even if it is very complicated to explain the causes and the factsthat characterized this event that is still affecting our society, itis important to understand why it is happening.Speaking in a very general way we can say that since the 90sthere have been two opposite poles of behavior. One is theAmerican, characterized by an exaggeration of greed;n° 9/2013, page 155
