There are lots of different opinions about that time, but personally I think, I wouldn’t be able to live incommunist times, communist reality. First and foremost, the soviets tried to ruin the Polish culture. Studentscompulsory had to learn the Russian language. Soviets changed some traditional Polish holidays and replacedsome traditions (they switched Santa Claus to Father Frost for example). As a Polish person, who loves mycountry I can’t accept destroying the Polish culture. What is more we live in the twenty-first century. Now we canget almost everything easily. Shop shelves are full. We have cell phones, computers, the Internet. I can’timagine life without them.In communist times there were too few goods in shops.Sometimes there were no goods at all. In order to buysomething people had to queue all night. On the other hand in communist times each adult couldeasily find a job and they always got their salary, so theydidn’t have to worry about their family’s future. However, some people worked very hard and some did almost nothing. It was unfair, because either way they earned the sameamount of money. To sum up, I wouldn’t find myself in communist times.Although everybody had jobs, people were deprived of basicgoods and their national culture. So I think that our presentlife is much easier than the one in those times. Now we cando what we want, whenever we want. We don’t have topretend to be somebody else to survive and live untroubled. Our country is finally free and we can be proud of it.Lea TIEDEMANN (1996), HPS Buxtehude/GermanyApril 17th, 2012 at 2:06 pmYour text is very good. I think that it’s interesting that you included your own opinion!posted on Monday, March 26th, 2012Traditional holidays were substituted by secular ones.Would the young generation of the 21st centurylike to take part in them?by Marta BARANKIEWICZ (1996), Anna MATYJA (1995), 8LO Kraków/PolandIn Poland traditional holidays were substituted by secular ones. TheSoviet government changed Catholic celebrations into political ones. Wethink that the young people of the 21st century in our country would notlike to take part in them.First, we think our Catholic celebrations are magic and a part of ourtypical folklore. The Soviet government liquidated two Catholic holidaysimportant to the Polish people: on 6th of January - Three Kings’ Day andon 15th of August – the Assumption of Mary. For Polish people religionand God mean devotion and attachment. Faith for hard-working peoplewas an enormous support. On Christmas Eve Father Frost came to Polishchildren, but earlier it was traditional Santa Claus. The Father Frost wasgreat, but in our opinion he was unnecessary, because we had SantaClaus who also brought lots of sweets. We had to celebrate, for example, on 7th of November, theanniversary of October Revolution, on 12th of October, the ArmyDay instead of our Independence Day on 11th of November. Theyoung people would prefer to commemorate the Independence Day.People tried to show their independence and bond with theirhomeland. The Soviet government liquidated our IndependenceDay. It’ s the most important holiday to us. It’s a symbol of victoryand bravery of Polish soldiers. Soviet people wanted to change ourcelebrations to more political ones, but Polish people know theirhistory very well. We want to celebrate holidays which areconnected with our culture and tradition.Communism was a very hard time for our nation. People had lots of problems and they had to worry about theirfuture. Festivals were nice events and a relaxing thing. All the time we had to struggle against the Sovietstrength, but we were constant and obstinate and it led us to our victory. The young generation want toremember about their traditions and folklore. Our culture is really unique. We would not like to take part insecular celebrations introduced by Soviets, because we have beautiful Polish customs we are proud of.posted on Sunday, March 4th, 2012n° 9/2013, page 85
