Customizing Preferences and Setting up Your Workspace how do I modify InDesign preferences? Like in QuarkXPress, if you modify InDesign preferences when no documents are open, the changes apply to all new documents but not to previously created documents. If you modify preferences when a document is open, the changes apply only to the open document. As you move through the various panes of the Preferences dialog box, you’ll see that many of the options are identical to options found in QuarkXPress. Here are a few unfamiliar but useful Preference options that you’ll find in InDesign CS3: 10 Adobe InDesign CS3 | Conversion guide Before you begin working on documents with InDesign, you should familiarize yourself with the program’s default settings—specifically, the options in the Preferences dialog box (InDesign > Preferences > General in Mac OS or Edit > Preferences > General in Windows) and the New Document dialog box (File > New > Document). The options let you balance speed and quality for onscreen display. • Apply Leading To Entire Paragraphs (Type panel) applies leading values to whole paragraphs, as you’re accustomed to with QuarkXPress. If you don’t choose this option, InDesign treats leading as a character attribute, not a paragraph attribute. Leading controls are displayed in the Character panel (Type > Character) and in the Control panel (Window > Control) when the Character Formatting Controls icon is selected in the Control panel. • The Spelling pane provides options for flagging misspelled, repeated, and uncapitalized words, and uncapitalized sentences, when you perform a spell check. If you check Enable Dynamic Spelling, InDesign will flag misspellings in real time in a layout and the Story Editor. • Type Tool Converts Frames To Text Frames (Type pane) lets you determine whether clicking the Type tool within an empty graphics frame or an unassigned frame changes the target frame into a text frame. when Apply Leading to Entire Paragraphs is not selected, you can apply different leading values within a paragraph. when Apply Leading to Entire Paragraphs is selected, any leading value you specify is applied to all lines in a paragraph. set spelling preferences to specify what InDesign will highlight when you perform a spell check (Edit > spelling > Check spelling) and to direct InDesign to dynamically underline misspelled, repeated, and uncapitalized words and sentences.
