selected object. The options are:
Right Side, Left Side, Both Right
& Left Sides, Side Towards Spine,
Side Away From Spine, and Largest
Area. When specifying text
wrap options for a graphics frame,
the choice you make in the Type
menu determines what InDesign
uses when wrapping text around
the selected object. The options are:
Bounding Box, Detect Edges, Alpha
Channel, Photoshop Path, Graphic
Frame, or Same As Clipping.
When you specify text wrap options
for an object on a master page, you
can choose Apply To Master Page
Only in the Pages panel menu to
apply the text wrap settings only to
the object on the master page and
not the corresponding objects on
document pages. If you don’t select
Apply To Master Page Only, text wrap
settings you specify for a master page
object are also applied to corresponding
objects on document pages.
how can I place an object within text
so that the object flows with the text?
When you copy a QuarkXPress item
or group and then paste it into text,
it’s called an anchored item, and
behaves like a single text character
that moves with the adjoining text
as you make edits to the text.
InDesign also lets you create
anchored objects. However, in addition
to positioning an anchored
object within a text frame, InDesign
also lets you position an anchored
object outside a text frame. This
option is especially useful for creating
pull quotes, figures, and sidebars.
You can use any of three methods
for creating an anchored object in
InDesign: copy and paste, the Place
command (File menu), or the Insert
command (Object > Anchored
Object > Insert).
Copying and pasting or placing
anchored objects work similarly:
Just click an insertion point in text,
and then choose Edit > Paste or
File > Place. Then choose Object >
Anchored Object > Options to finetune
the positioning. (See the next
question for details.)
To insert an anchored object, click
an insertion point in text, and choose
Object > Anchored Object > Insert.
The Insert Anchored Object dialog
box is displayed. In the Object
Options area, specify the kind of
frame you want to insert (Text,
Graphic, or Unassigned), assign
an object style (and a paragraph
style, if you insert a text frame),
and specify the size of the object.
From the Position menu in the Position
area, choose Inline Or Above
Line to place the anchored object
within the text frame. Choose
Custom to place the object inside
or outside the frame. Use the other
controls in the Position area to
specify the location and behavior
of the anchored object.
what else should I know about
anchored objects?
After you create an anchored object—
whichever method you use to create
it—you can control its position by
selecting it and choosing Object >
Anchored Object > Options. The
controls in the Anchored Object
Options dialog box are a subset of the
controls in the Insert Anchored
Object dialog box.
If you select Prevent Manual Positioning
in the Insert Anchored
Object dialog box or the Anchored
Object Options dialog box, you
cannot manually reposition an
anchored object. If Prevent Manual
Positioning is not selected, you
can drag an Inline Or Above Line
anchored object vertically but not
horizontally; you can drag a Custom
anchored object in any direction.
When a Custom anchored object
is selected, choosing Object >
Anchored Object > Release breaks
the link between the object and its
text frame.
