• Clear overrides. A plus sign (+) is
displayed next to the style name
in the Paragraph Styles panel if
you’ve manually changed any
character or paragraph formats in
selected text. If you choose Clear
Overrides from the Paragraph
Styles panel menu in this situation,
any manual changes you’ve
made are cleared, and the entire
paragraph is formatted using
the paragraph style settings.
• Create style groups. New in
InDesign CS3 is the ability to organize
related paragraph and character
styles by creating style groups.
For example, if you’re working
on a publication that has several
variations of a basic Body Copy
paragraph style—for example,
Body Copy With Drop Cap, Body
Copy After Subhead, Body Copy
With Bullet, and so on—you could
create a style group.
Style groups are identified in the
Paragraph Styles and Character
Styles panels with a folder symbol.
Clicking the arrow next to
a style group folder alternately
shows and hides the styles in the
group. To create a style group,
select multiple paragraph styles
or character styles in the Paragraph
Styles or Character Styles
panel, and then choose New Style
Group from the panel menu.
Applying Successive Paragraph Styles
The Apply Then Next Style feature lets you format
an entire story that uses several different paragraph styles—all in
a single action. To use this feature, create a sequence of linked
paragraph styles using the Next Style option in the General
pane of the New Paragraph Style dialog box.
In this example, all the text
in the text frame at left was
styled at once by selecting the
frame, right-clicking (or Controlclicking
in Mac OS) the standard_
title style in the Paragraph Styles
panel, and then choosing Apply
“standard_title” Then Next Style.
At left, you see the results of
choosing Apply “standard_title”
Then Next Style. Because the
standard_title paragraph style
is the first of several linked styles,
all of the text in the frame was
formatted in a single step.
