how do I create character and
paragraph styles with InDesign?
Creating character and paragraph
styles is very similar in QuarkXPress
and InDesign. In both programs, you
can begin by formatting some text
and highlighting the text to use it
as the starting point for a character
or paragraph style, or you can start
without formatting or highlighting
any text in advance.
To create a paragraph or character
style, choose Type > Paragraph
Styles or Type > Character Styles.
Then choose New Paragraph Style or
New Character Style from the panel
menu, and go through the different
panes to assign the formatting
attributes you want. Use distinctive
names for your styles to make them
easy to remember.
what are the most useful features
for working with character and
paragraph styles?
Here’s a description of some stylerelated
features that you may find
helpful:
Selectively import styles from other
InDesign documents. You can load
(import) all or some of the paragraph
styles and character styles
from another InDesign document
(any version) into the active document.
If you load a style that has the
same name as an existing style in
the target document, you can either
overwrite the style in the target document
or rename the incoming style.
To import paragraph styles, choose
Load Paragraph Styles from the Paragraph
Styles panel menu. To import
character styles, choose Load Char-
acter Styles from the Character Styles
panel menu. To import paragraph
and character styles, choose Load All
Text Styles from the Paragraph Styles
or Character Styles panel menu.
Apply successive paragraph styles
to multiple paragraphs in a single
step. If you’ve linked multiple paragraph
styles using the Next Style
option in the General pane of the
Paragraph Style Options dialog box,
you can apply the styles in succession
to highlighted paragraphs. For
example, if you’ve created a Headline
style that’s followed by a Byline style
that’s followed by a Body Text style,
you can select several paragraphs,
right-click (or Control-click in Mac
