68 Adobe InDesign CS3 | Conversion guide
Whether you’re outputting InDesign files to print or as Adobe PDF
documents for distribution on the web, mobile devices, or phones, you’ll find
that InDesign offers a rich array of options for achieving the results you want.
The Preflight utility helps ensure your documents will print reliably by identifying
potential problems, and the Package command lets you collect all the
files you need to print a document with the click of a mouse.
Can I preview onscreen how my
document will look in print?
InDesign offers several display
options that let you see onscreen
how a document will look in its
final printed or PDF form:
Print preview. If you click the
Preview icon in the Tools panel,
nonprinting elements, such as rulers,
gridlines, and frame edges, are not
displayed, and the pasteboard is
grayed out, giving you an accurate
view of what document pages will
look like when exported as PDF
or printed. Click the Bleed or Slug
icon in the Tools panel to view
the bleed or slug area with the page.
Turn off display of various nonprinting
elements by choosing the
appropriate command from the
View menu, such as View > Grids
& Guides > Hide Guides.
Overprint preview. If you choose
Overprint Preview (View menu),
InDesign displays an onscreen
“ink preview” that approximates
how gradients, transparency, and
overprinting will appear in colorseparated
output.
Separations preview. The Separations
Preview panel (Window >
Output > Separations Preview) lets
you and your print service provider
visually check individual or multi-
ple plates, preview overprinting
objects, and view ink limit warnings
onscreen before printing. The Separations
Preview panel lets you show
and hide individual color plates,
and you can use it to “build” a spread
onscreen one color at a time. It’s
an invaluable tool for soft-proofing
multicolor documents onscreen.
