Adding fractions<br />

The following gives an example of adding two fractions.<br />

First, find the least common multiple of the denominator. In this case, 12 is the lowest<br />

common multiple of 3 <strong>and</strong> 4. Then, multiply the numerators by the same factor needed to<br />

make the denominators 12:<br />

Finally, add the numerators, put the sum over the common denominator, <strong>and</strong> reduce:<br />

Dividing fractions<br />

Flip the numerator <strong>and</strong> denominator in the bottom fraction (which is called its reciprocal)<br />

<strong>and</strong> then multiply the original fraction in the numerator by this reciprocal.<br />
