Both <strong>the</strong> ethical paraenesis of Revelation 2–3 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> visions <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

support <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>and</strong> maintenance of communities of faith that<br />

are based on an exclusive allegiance to <strong>the</strong> One who sits on <strong>the</strong> throne,<br />

<strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> Lamb, <strong>and</strong> on a repudiation of compromise with Greco-<br />

Roman values. Near <strong>the</strong> heart of that community life lies a strong view of<br />

<strong>the</strong> history-revealing victory won by Jesus in <strong>the</strong> cross <strong>and</strong> resurrection,<br />

<strong>the</strong> significance of faithful witness to that Jesus, even to <strong>the</strong> point of death,<br />

<strong>and</strong> of separation from evil—both symbolically <strong>and</strong> literally.
