the point of view of activity, is the acting Unconscious, and which, regarded<br />

from the point of view of passivity, is the superficial consciousness that has<br />

been acted upon.<br />

Man-after-satori will not then become capable of seizing the sentiment<br />

which the man-before-satori was incapable of seizing. For satori, or the<br />

awakening of the Fundamental Mind, dissipates the illusory hybrid<br />

representation which we call sentiment. And it is precisely the fruitless<br />

attempt to seize the unseizable sentiment which results in the awakening of<br />

the Fundamental Mind. <strong>The</strong>re is no more sentiment for man-after-satori; his<br />

surface consciousness is acted upon directly by the Fundamental Mind in a<br />

reply that is cosmically harmonious to the excitation of the outside world;<br />

this reply takes account of the particular outer circumstances but it is not at<br />

all wrought upon, 'in-formed' by it.<br />
