17., 18. The six notebooks (MSS. V. A. 13.-18.) are portions of the<br />

same draft (numbered I, n, IV, VI, VII, VIII by Joyce; the missing<br />

portions of this draft, III, V, IX, etc. are not part of this collection<br />

<strong>and</strong> are either lost or destroyed); this is a l<strong>at</strong>er draft than MSS. V.<br />

A. 11. <strong>and</strong> 12. (probably the next draft). It is a l<strong>at</strong>e draft; the published<br />

versions follow this draft closely; correspondence in texts<br />

can be seen paragraph by paragraph.<br />

MS. begins, "Some man th<strong>at</strong> wayfaring was stood by housedoor<br />

<strong>at</strong> night's oncoming. Of Israel's folk was th<strong>at</strong> man ..."<br />

MS. ends, "... but yet was she left after long years a h<strong>and</strong>maid.<br />
