Contents: A small section of the "Circe" episode, RH 568.26—586.20.<br />

D<strong>at</strong>ing: Photost<strong>at</strong> made in the spring of 1921, probably toward the end<br />

of April 1921. The manuscript from which the photost<strong>at</strong> was made<br />

can be d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>e 1920.<br />

Notes: During the final prepar<strong>at</strong>ion of the "Circe" episode for the<br />

printer, the husb<strong>and</strong> of one of <strong>Joyce's</strong> typists (a Mr. Harrison)<br />

threw the episode into the fire. A number of pages were destroyed.<br />

Joyce had no other copy; he therefore asked John Quinn, who had<br />

purchased the holograph manuscript of Ulysses, to return the portion<br />

destroyed. Quinn had the requested pages photographed in<br />

New York <strong>and</strong> sent to Joyce, who then had these pages copied by<br />

h<strong>and</strong> (MS. V. B. 13. b. <strong>and</strong> part of MS. V. B. 13. d.) <strong>and</strong> typed (MS.<br />

V. B. 13. c, pp. 128-37 of MS. V. B. 13. e., <strong>and</strong> pp. 130-42 of MS.<br />

V. B. 13. h.).<br />
