mm. Paratypes similar to holotype and allotype<br />

except in the following respects. Color <strong>of</strong><br />

body sometimes darkened to dark green or<br />

brownish-green. Additional characters as follows.<br />

Male Genitalia: Phallobase 1.7 times<br />

longer than length <strong>of</strong> parameres. Parameres<br />

dorsoventrally flattened, apicomedially acute.<br />

ETYMOLOGY. Platycoelia grandicula is derived<br />

from Latin meaning “the rather large<br />

Platycoelia.”<br />

DIAGNOSIS. This species is distinguished<br />

from all other species in the genus Platycoelia<br />

by the following combination <strong>of</strong> characters:<br />

frontoclypeal suture incomplete; labrum with<br />

a well-developed, truncate apical tooth<br />

strongly overlapping the mentum; mentum<br />

with a distinct tooth curved into the oral cavity;<br />

antenna 10-segmented; pronotum surface<br />

densely punctate with a mix <strong>of</strong> small and<br />

moderate punctures; elytron with a distinct,<br />

yellow, longitudinal line on stria 1; elytral api-<br />

ces capable <strong>of</strong> completely covering the pygidium;<br />

pygidium entirely setose; metasternum<br />

and abdominal sternites green or yellow;<br />

protibial apical 2 teeth adjacent, located in<br />

the apical quarter <strong>of</strong> the protibia; protibial<br />

spur noticeably shorter than the adjacent<br />

tibial apex; protarsomere 3 in males without<br />

a distinct apical stridulatory patch; modified<br />

protarsal claw in males laterally flattened;<br />

mesotarsomere 4 and metatarsomere 4 in<br />

males with an apical stridulatory ridge;<br />

mesotarsomere 5 and metatarsomere 5 with<br />

an internobasal tooth; parameres with the<br />

apex dorsoventrally flattened.<br />

DISTRIBUTION (Fig. 62). Occurs in mid- to<br />

low-elevation montane areas <strong>of</strong> Costa Rica<br />

and Panamá.<br />

LOCALITY DATA. 94 specimens examined<br />

from CNCI, DCCC, DCHC, DJCC, EGRC,<br />

FSCA, HAHC, INBC, LACM, PKLC, RFMC,<br />

SEMC, UNSM, USNM.
