ETYMOLOGY. Platycoelia insolita means<br />

“the unusual Platycoelia” referring to the<br />

atypical appearance <strong>of</strong> this species.<br />

DIAGNOSIS. This species is distinguished<br />

from all other species in the genus Platycoelia<br />

by the following combination <strong>of</strong> characters:<br />

frontoclypeal suture complete; apex <strong>of</strong> the labrum<br />

with a reduced, triangular tooth not<br />

overlapping mentum; mentum with a medial<br />

notch; antenna 10-segmented; elytron without<br />

distinct, yellow, longitudinal lines; elytral<br />

apices not capable <strong>of</strong> completely covering the<br />

pygidium; apex <strong>of</strong> the elytral suture with an<br />

acute spine; mesothoracic process projecting<br />

apically past the mesocoxa; apical abdominal<br />

spiracle not protuberant; protibia <strong>of</strong> male<br />

with 1 prominent tooth; mesotarsomere 5 and<br />

metatarsomere 5 without an internal tooth;<br />

parameres with the apex rounded, not expanded.<br />

DISTRIBUTION (Fig. 73). Known from the<br />

high Andes Mountains <strong>of</strong> central Perú.<br />

LOCALITY DATA. 35 specimens examined<br />

from CASC, LACM, MNHN, UCDC, USNM.<br />

Pilcopata (40 km W), Urubamba.<br />

Type locality: Colombia.<br />

DESCRIPTION. Male (n=24). Length 15.4-<br />

17.1 mm, width 7.8-9.4 mm (Fig. 75). Color<br />

dorsally greenish-tan to dark green, head<br />

with frons black, pronotum with black maculations<br />

(at least medially in apical half, extending<br />

laterally to base) to all black;<br />

ventrally dark brown to black, legs tan to<br />

light brown. Body subelliptical, convex. Head:<br />
