VARIATION. Male (n=11). Length 15.2-19.5<br />

mm, width 8.4-10.2 mm. Female: unknown.<br />

The paratypes differ from the holotype in the<br />

following respects. Color sometimes yellow.<br />

Head: Antenna sometimes appearing 10-segmented.<br />

Additional characters as follows.<br />

Head: Mandibular scissorial region with two<br />

teeth, molar region with weakly developed<br />

lamellae. Maxilla with 3 apical teeth, middle<br />

tooth bifurcate. Male Genitalia: Phallobase<br />

approximately 1.5 times longer than length <strong>of</strong><br />

parameres. Paramere with apex rounded.<br />

ETYMOLOGY. Platycoelia pusilla is derived<br />

from Latin meaning “the tiny Platycoelia.”<br />

DIAGNOSIS. This species is distinguished<br />

from all other species in the genus Platycoelia<br />

by the following combination <strong>of</strong> characters:<br />

length less than 20 mm; frons not depressed<br />

medioapically; frontoclypeal suture complete;<br />

apex <strong>of</strong> the labrum with a reduced, triangular<br />

tooth not overlapping the mentum; mentum<br />

with a medial notch; antenna 9-segmented<br />

(sometimes appearing 10-segmented), club<br />

not longer than other segments combined;<br />

elytral apices not capable <strong>of</strong> completely covering<br />

the pygidium; apex <strong>of</strong> the elytral suture<br />

without an acute spine; metasternum with a<br />

dark medial patch; abdominal sternites green<br />

to yellow; mesothoracic process projecting<br />

apically past the mesocoxa; apical abdominal<br />

spiracle strongly protuberant; mesotarsomere<br />

5 and metatarsomere 5 without an internal<br />

tooth; parameres with the apex rounded, not<br />

expanded.<br />

DISTRIBUTION (Fig. 71). Known from the<br />

Andes Mountains <strong>of</strong> central to southern Colombia.<br />

LOCALITY DATA. 12 specimens examined<br />

from MNHN, SMFD, USNM, ZMHB.<br />

Martínez (1976) based his description on the<br />

holotype and one paratype. Type locality:<br />

Volcán Puracé, Huila, Colombia.<br />

DESCRIPTION. Male (n=4). Length 19.4-<br />

21.2 mm, width 10.8-11.8 mm. Color olive<br />

green or brownish-yellow; elytral intervals 3<br />

and 5 sometimes with weak, yellow, longitudinal<br />

stripe; elytron with yellow margin;<br />

metasternum with medial, light brown patch;<br />

abdominal sternites olive green to brownishyellow.<br />

Body ovate, convex. Head: Dorsal surface<br />

glabrous. Frons rugopunctate, clypeus<br />

rugose, punctures moderate. Frons not depressed.<br />

Frontoclypeal suture complete.<br />

Clypeal apex broadly rounded. Eyes separated<br />

by approximately 3.8 transverse eye-widths.
