the group intranet.<br />

internal communicati<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tributing to social resp<strong>on</strong>sibility<br />

internal communicati<strong>on</strong>s efforts had to<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>d to an unprecedented range<br />

of challenges in 2009, including a systematically<br />

negative treatment of the<br />

banking industry in the french media.<br />

throughout the turmoil of the financial<br />

crisis, bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> took all available opportunities<br />

to keep its staff informed by<br />

circulating memos and informative brochures<br />

outlining the group’s strategy.<br />

in 2009 a series of communicati<strong>on</strong> activities<br />

were targeted at employees<br />

using a variety of media: “Ambiti<strong>on</strong>”,<br />

the group’s in-house magazine is published<br />

in english, french, italian, dutch<br />

and russian and serves as a source<br />

of news about bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> as well as<br />

insights into its strategy. “starlight”, the<br />

in-house video channel, is devoted to<br />

bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> innovati<strong>on</strong>s. Programming is<br />

presented in a six-minute newsflash format.<br />

clips can be viewed each m<strong>on</strong>th<br />

<strong>on</strong> the group’s intranet sites in french,<br />

english and italian. since 2009 a newsflash<br />

in dutch has also been introduced.<br />

a weekly newsletter, “Flash Groupe” is<br />

circulated to staff in 15 territories and<br />

provides a round-up of key news issues<br />

each week. similarly, an annual review<br />

is also published while the group’s business-to-employee<br />

intranet was overhauled<br />

in 2008. the intranet website recorded<br />

104 milli<strong>on</strong> page views in 2009.<br />

finally, a dedicated electr<strong>on</strong>ic newsletter<br />

covering csr issues is published <strong>on</strong><br />

the group’s intranet each m<strong>on</strong>th.<br />

protecting employee health<br />

the group’s occupati<strong>on</strong>al health policy<br />

goes bey<strong>on</strong>d simply complying with<br />

changing legislative requirements. the<br />

major comp<strong>on</strong>ents of the policy are risk<br />

mitigati<strong>on</strong> and support for employees<br />

who are at-risk or who have become<br />

unfit for work.<br />

preventing occupati<strong>on</strong>al hazards<br />

Preventi<strong>on</strong> begins with an assessment of<br />

occupati<strong>on</strong>al hazards: violence in bank<br />

branches, musculoskeletal disorders, air<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>ing and ventilati<strong>on</strong> malfuncti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

a multidisciplinary team set up in<br />

2006 pools the skills and knowledge of its<br />

members to prevent these risks and deal<br />

with pathologies stemming from multiple<br />

factors. this approach to working c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

offers greater opportunity for preventi<strong>on</strong><br />

and fosters c<strong>on</strong>certed acti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

in 2009, particular emphasis was placed<br />

<strong>on</strong> the following areas:<br />

— the approach to hazard evaluati<strong>on</strong><br />

and preventi<strong>on</strong> (mandatory document<br />

required by the french ministerial<br />

order of 5 november 2001);<br />

— the quality of ventilati<strong>on</strong> and air<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>ing;<br />

— lighting, office floor plate erg<strong>on</strong>omics<br />

and new technologies (e.g. wifi);<br />

— erg<strong>on</strong>omics of staff workstati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

for employees working in accueil<br />

& services retail banking branches;<br />

— erg<strong>on</strong>omic enhancements for call<br />

centres in lille and Paris.<br />

medical assistance to employees that<br />

have been victims of attacks, in particular<br />

in the Paris regi<strong>on</strong>, is provided in c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong><br />

with the city’s emergency medical<br />

services this initiative has been progressively<br />

reinforced in recent years, and its<br />

effects can be seen in the reducti<strong>on</strong>s in<br />

both the number and length of leaves of<br />

absence in the wake of attacks and in<br />

requests for transfer to another positi<strong>on</strong><br />

subsequent to an attack. in 2009, 46 employees<br />

received medical assistance after<br />

an attack. five of them were referred<br />

to specialists for psychological help.<br />

initiatives<br />

in February 2009, bnp paribas<br />

launched forachangingworld.com,<br />

a website focused <strong>on</strong> public-interest<br />

initiatives undertaken or supported<br />

by bnp paribas worldwide.<br />

the website and related blog were<br />

designed as an interactive space<br />

for the general public, available<br />

in french and english. they show<br />

the importance that bnp paribas<br />

places <strong>on</strong> its commitments and staff<br />

initiatives in all areas relating<br />

to corporate philanthropy, including<br />

microcredit, support for schools,<br />

medical research, culture<br />

and urban regenerati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

the forachangingworld.com blog<br />

encourages ideas, reacti<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tacts, with the aim of providing<br />

c<strong>on</strong>stant guidance regarding<br />

the initiatives taken by the group<br />

and its staff.<br />

A reference guide<br />

<strong>on</strong> best practice<br />

in csR<br />

bnp paribas Wealth management<br />

has developed a best practice<br />

guide for employees to showcase<br />

its initiatives in the field of<br />

corporate social and envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>sibility (Csr). this informative<br />

guide educates staff about ways<br />

in which they can c<strong>on</strong>tribute to the<br />

company’s sustainability drive.<br />

the guide is designed to be both<br />

practical and fun. it is presented<br />

in a quiz format which gives staff<br />

all of the relevant informati<strong>on</strong> they<br />

need to understand bnp paribas<br />

Wealth management’s sustainability<br />

initiatives.<br />

A formal<br />

psychological<br />

support programme<br />

this dedicated assistance unit<br />

was created in france in 2008<br />

as part of bnp paribas’s effort<br />

to provide support for victims,<br />

and members of the public suffering<br />

from trauma as well as staff<br />

members, service providers<br />

and clients in the wake of hold‑ups,<br />

violence, hostage‑taking, workplace<br />

suicides, attacks, terrorism,<br />

landslides, fires, explosi<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

other natural disasters. A 24-hour<br />

hotline is available seven days<br />

a week and provides psychological<br />

assistance to individuals throughout<br />

france and french overseas<br />

territories <strong>on</strong> behalf of bnp paribas<br />

and its subsidiaries. the service<br />

is available for all employees<br />

and service providers working<br />

in the group’s premises in france.
