<strong>on</strong> behalf of the french retail banking<br />
divisi<strong>on</strong>, bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> sa’s occupati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
health department participated in a<br />
working group set up to help to prevent<br />
and manage customer incivility and to<br />
assist and support customer-facing staff.<br />
in the area of preventi<strong>on</strong>, for example,<br />
behaviour training is provided which<br />
combines role-playing games and experiencing<br />
sharing exercises. staff learns<br />
how to identify factors that lead to aggressiveness,<br />
apply techniques for handling<br />
c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>tati<strong>on</strong>al situati<strong>on</strong>s and cope<br />
with feelings of anger and humiliati<strong>on</strong>. in<br />
2009 close to 2,300 pers<strong>on</strong>s participated<br />
in incivility awareness training. assistance<br />
and support for employees are provided<br />
by management. Psychological and<br />
medical assistance is provided by the<br />
occupati<strong>on</strong>al Health department. in<br />
cases where death threats are made, an<br />
emergency psychological support team<br />
is mobilised. similarly, administrative and<br />
legal assistance is provided for employees<br />
having to notify social security or policy<br />
authorities of workplace accidents or<br />
civil and criminal complaints.<br />
specific initiatives are pursued to mitigate<br />
other occupati<strong>on</strong>al hazards: informati<strong>on</strong><br />
campaigns, training, design erg<strong>on</strong>omics,<br />
remedial erg<strong>on</strong>omics and alert procedures.<br />
in 2009, the group stepped up<br />
its efforts in the area of workplace erg<strong>on</strong>omics:<br />
13 plan studies, 122 premises inspecti<strong>on</strong>s<br />
and 8 studies were c<strong>on</strong>ducted.<br />
the high degree of vigilance exercised<br />
jointly by the occupati<strong>on</strong>al health department,<br />
management teams, facilities<br />
management functi<strong>on</strong>s, the work of the<br />
erg<strong>on</strong>omics unit and works committees<br />
has c<strong>on</strong>tributed to the very low rate of<br />
musculoskeletal problems reported in<br />
bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> sa.<br />
public health issues<br />
bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> sa’s occupati<strong>on</strong>al health<br />
department has been working for many<br />
years to promote employee health. in<br />
the course of annual medical checkups,<br />
occupati<strong>on</strong>al physicians provide<br />
pers<strong>on</strong>alised care in all areas of public<br />
health. awareness campaigns, brochures<br />
and specific programmes are designed<br />
to address key health risks, including<br />
cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity<br />
and smoking.<br />
a variety of additi<strong>on</strong>al public health initiatives<br />
were pursued in 2009.<br />
a working group comprised by operati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
Hr managers from all group divisi<strong>on</strong>s<br />
and functi<strong>on</strong>s was set up to engage<br />
in c<strong>on</strong>tingency planning for pandemic<br />
preparati<strong>on</strong> and to define appropriate<br />
sanitary and organisati<strong>on</strong>al resp<strong>on</strong>ses.<br />
the plan developed covers purchasing<br />
of hygienic masks, compiling a database<br />
of hygiene products, measures to<br />
raise awareness about pers<strong>on</strong>al hygiene<br />
(hand washing) and the display of posters<br />
in washrooms. more than 3,960 influenza<br />
vaccinati<strong>on</strong>s were administered in<br />
2009. in additi<strong>on</strong>, a business c<strong>on</strong>tinuity<br />
plan was developed to deal with an outbreak<br />
of the a H1n1 virus.<br />
the cardiovascular disease preventi<strong>on</strong><br />
programme, “Pcv métra”, c<strong>on</strong>tinues<br />
to screen for risk factors such as high<br />
cholesterol, hypertensi<strong>on</strong>, smoking and<br />
stress. medical evaluati<strong>on</strong>s at broussais<br />
Hospital of employees found to be at<br />
risk and screening for cor<strong>on</strong>ary impairments<br />
with a view to early treatment<br />
have resulted in 226 blood tests and<br />
5 <strong>on</strong>e-day hospital admissi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
635 people took part in a programme to<br />
help employees and their family members<br />
in the Paris regi<strong>on</strong> stop smoking<br />
through the allen carr method; 47% of<br />
those who resp<strong>on</strong>ded to the satisfacti<strong>on</strong><br />
survey stopped smoking in 2008. in other<br />
parts of france, 73 people participated<br />
in sessi<strong>on</strong>s held in arras, dij<strong>on</strong>, orleans,<br />
chartres and marseille. a free-of-charge<br />
follow-up sessi<strong>on</strong> was organised by the<br />
allen carr foundati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> 6 november<br />
2009. this sessi<strong>on</strong> was organised for staff<br />
who had resumed smoking after having<br />
been cigarette free.<br />
each occupati<strong>on</strong>al health office is now<br />
equipped with a t<strong>on</strong>ometer to screen<br />
for glaucoma. screening tests for diabetes<br />
are also offered.<br />
support for employees with l<strong>on</strong>gterm<br />
illnesses or incapacity for work<br />
as in the area of preventi<strong>on</strong> of occupati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
hazards, the occupati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
health department, Hr managers and<br />
line managers work closely together to<br />
redeploy employees returning to work<br />
after several m<strong>on</strong>ths’ absence due to<br />
illness. given the rapid pace of change<br />
within the group, the reintegrati<strong>on</strong> process<br />
must factor in an adjustment to the<br />
new circumstances, so as to dispel employees’<br />
worries and allow them the<br />
time to get back <strong>on</strong> their feet.<br />
in some cases, employees can meet<br />
with the occupati<strong>on</strong>al physician before<br />
resuming work, either because they<br />
request it or because their general<br />
practiti<strong>on</strong>er or the reviewing physician<br />
recommends it. in such instances the<br />
occupati<strong>on</strong>al physician helps the<br />
employee to prepare for a return to<br />
work, taking into c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> any<br />

issues<br />
stress is the sec<strong>on</strong>d most prevalent<br />
occupati<strong>on</strong>al pathology after<br />
musculoskeletal disorders.<br />

the french institute for acti<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>on</strong> stress, in paris and ly<strong>on</strong>.<br />
At the beginning of each periodic<br />
medical visit, employees fill<br />
out a c<strong>on</strong>fidential, an<strong>on</strong>ymous<br />
questi<strong>on</strong>naire that is immediately<br />
assessed by an occupati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
physician for purposes of a<br />
pers<strong>on</strong>al diagnosis. the data is<br />
then compiled and processed by<br />
iFas, an independent body, which<br />
returns the results to bnp paribas.<br />
Results are used to measure<br />
stress levels, pinpoint populati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
at risk and take appropriate<br />
preventive measures. in 2009<br />
close to 7,000 pers<strong>on</strong>s completed<br />
this questi<strong>on</strong>naire. the medical<br />
observatory of stress and mental<br />
health issues was extended<br />
to bnp paribas pers<strong>on</strong>al finances<br />
and bnpp Assurance in 2009.<br />

crisis communicati<strong>on</strong>s programme<br />
for workplace emergencies.<br />

A dedicated “emergencies” secti<strong>on</strong><br />
of the group’s intranet was also<br />
created. the secti<strong>on</strong> includes<br />
an interactive graphical sequence<br />
which educates staff about their role<br />
and resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities.
