jazz, a musical style that knows<br />

no borders<br />

bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> is <strong>on</strong>e of the few corporate<br />

sp<strong>on</strong>sors to support jazz, both in france<br />

and increasingly in other countries.<br />

in 2009, bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> again<br />

joined forces with the saint-germaindes-Prés<br />

jazz festival. the festival showcases<br />

young artists, and stages exclusive<br />

shows by established artists as well as<br />

c<strong>on</strong>certs in unusual locati<strong>on</strong>s. it is open<br />

to the widest possible audience, who<br />

share in the festival’s community spirit.<br />

bnP Pariba s subsidiar y banque<br />

internati<strong>on</strong>ale pour le commerce et<br />

l’industrie du sénégal (bicis) has partnered<br />

the saint-louis jazz festival in<br />

senegal for nearly ten years, and has<br />

recently increased its support. through<br />

its collaborati<strong>on</strong> with the bnP <strong>Paribas</strong><br />

foundati<strong>on</strong> since 2008, bicis has been<br />

able to attract leading artists sp<strong>on</strong>sored<br />

by the foundati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

the bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong>’s efforts<br />

to support jazz artists over the last ten<br />

years have been extended by the bmci<br />

foundati<strong>on</strong> which, for the sec<strong>on</strong>d c<strong>on</strong>secutive<br />

year, sp<strong>on</strong>sored the tanjazz festival<br />

in tangiers, morocco in june 2009.<br />

dance and c<strong>on</strong>temporary circus<br />

in the area of modern circus and dance,<br />

bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> has for many years followed<br />

an audacious policy of helping troupes<br />

to be creative, raise their profile and cooperate.<br />

french choreographer abou lagraa,<br />

artistic director of the La Baraka troupe,<br />

has been supported by the bnP <strong>Paribas</strong><br />

foundati<strong>on</strong> since 2006. algeria’s ministry<br />

of culture has appointed mr lagraa to develop<br />

cultural links between france and<br />

algeria. throughout 2009, events were<br />

held in algeria in the run-up to this project,<br />

supported jointly by bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> el<br />

djazaïr and the bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

from 2010, this three-year co-operati<strong>on</strong><br />

between the two countries will involve<br />

the creati<strong>on</strong> of a 20-member c<strong>on</strong>temporary<br />

dance troupe within algeria’s nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

ballet company, and the creati<strong>on</strong><br />

of a piece entitled nya, the european<br />

premiere of which will take place in the<br />

“biennale internati<strong>on</strong>ale de la danse”<br />

festival in ly<strong>on</strong>.<br />

aurélien bory is the artistic director of<br />

compagnie 111 and has worked with<br />

the bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> for 7 years.<br />

for mr bory, 2009 was a breakthrough<br />

year, due to the success of his Les sept<br />

planches de la ruse show. the show was<br />

created in december in dalian, china,<br />

and is the result of co-operati<strong>on</strong> between<br />

the french director and 15 chinese dancers<br />

and acrobats from the dalian opera.<br />

its title les sept planches de la ruse is a<br />

literal translati<strong>on</strong> of the chinese name (Qi<br />

Qiao ban) for the popular game known<br />

as tangram. after an internati<strong>on</strong>al tour,<br />

the show triumphed in the summer of<br />

2009 when it visited asia, including H<strong>on</strong>g<br />

K<strong>on</strong>g and singapore.<br />

the bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> supports<br />

the c<strong>on</strong>temporary work d<strong>on</strong>e by choreographer<br />

georges momboye. as part of<br />

brazil’s “french seas<strong>on</strong>”, mr momboye presented<br />

his Boyakodah show in a number<br />

of brazilian cities including rio de janeiro,<br />

são Paolo, Porto alegre, curitiba and<br />

recife. this tour was made possible by<br />

the combined efforts of the bnP <strong>Paribas</strong><br />

foundati<strong>on</strong>s in france and brazil.<br />

25th annual “prix<br />

du Jeune Écrivain”<br />

(young writers’<br />

award)<br />

the “prix du Jeune Écrivain”, an<br />

award for young french-language<br />

authors aged between 15 and<br />

27 and judged by a panel of writers,<br />

has been supported by the<br />

bnp paribas foundati<strong>on</strong> since<br />

its incepti<strong>on</strong>. guy Chevalley,<br />

a 24‑year‑old from switzerland,<br />

w<strong>on</strong> first prize for l’Enfant<br />

sur la falaise. Winning entries<br />

were published in a collecti<strong>on</strong> in<br />

march 2010, and the winners were<br />

invited to the 2010 paris book fair<br />

(sal<strong>on</strong> du livre).<br />

the “sais<strong>on</strong> de la<br />

turquie” in paris<br />

bnp paribas sp<strong>on</strong>sored the seas<strong>on</strong><br />

of turkish culture in france and<br />

thereby paid homage to turkey’s<br />

vast expertise and know-how<br />

in cultural, scientific, industrial<br />

and ec<strong>on</strong>omic areas. the seas<strong>on</strong><br />

of turkish culture in France, which<br />

ran from July 2009 to march 2010,<br />

seeks to make turkish culture better<br />

known in france and encourages<br />

co-operative programmes between<br />

the two countries. this major<br />

cultural event is another of the<br />

activities and partnerships in which<br />

bnp paribas has been involved<br />

for many years through<br />

the bnp paribas foundati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

it strengthens the group’s<br />

commitment to the cultural<br />

and social life of the countries<br />

in which it operates.
