in 2009, for the sec<strong>on</strong>d c<strong>on</strong>secutive year,<br />

bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> corporate & investment<br />

banking (cib) decided to involve its<br />

customers in its charitable d<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

by allocating its end-of-year gift budget<br />

to a global cause, i.e. the fight against<br />

infectious diseases. working with the<br />

bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong>, cib c<strong>on</strong>tinued<br />

the partnership set up in 2008 with the<br />

institut Pasteur, a n<strong>on</strong>-profit private foundati<strong>on</strong><br />

which works to prevent and treat<br />

infectious diseases through research,<br />

teaching and public health initiatives.<br />

bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> cib has provided funding in<br />

29 countries to medical research teams<br />

from institut Pasteur’s internati<strong>on</strong>al network,<br />

as well as laboratories working in<br />

associati<strong>on</strong> with the institut Pasteur in<br />

Paris. the research programmes relate to<br />

issues like dengue fever (mexico), hepatitis<br />

c (spain), vaccines against measles<br />

and Hiv (uK), diagnosing amoebiasis<br />

(india), malaria (brazil and colombia),<br />

west nile virus (czech republic), tuberculosis<br />

(belgium), bird flu (france) and<br />

typhoid (ireland).<br />

in 2009, bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> again supported<br />

Pasteurd<strong>on</strong>, the institut Pasteur’s campaign<br />

to raise awareness and m<strong>on</strong>ey. in<br />

Paris, bordeaux, rouen and besanç<strong>on</strong>,<br />

a “Pasteurd<strong>on</strong> village” was set up, including<br />

an exhibiti<strong>on</strong> about diseases,<br />

scientific workshops for young people<br />

and informati<strong>on</strong> areas.<br />

bnp paribas and teleth<strong>on</strong>:<br />

a l<strong>on</strong>g-standing partnership<br />

bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> has supported france’s<br />

teleth<strong>on</strong> fund-raising organisati<strong>on</strong> since<br />

it began in 1987, by printing tax receipts<br />

and taking part in various initiatives for<br />

associati<strong>on</strong> française c<strong>on</strong>tre les myopathies<br />

(afm) (french myopathy associati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

the group is a major supporter of<br />

teleth<strong>on</strong> organisati<strong>on</strong>s in france, with<br />

2,400 branches <strong>on</strong> the french mainland<br />

and in overseas territories involved in<br />

solidarity initiatives, and in italy, through<br />

its presence <strong>on</strong> the internet and <strong>on</strong> the<br />

high street. funds raised by teleth<strong>on</strong> organisati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

have been spent <strong>on</strong> tools,<br />

laboratories and networks.<br />

in 2009, staff working at six bnP <strong>Paribas</strong><br />

offices in Paris collected more than<br />

eur 17,000 for teleth<strong>on</strong>. in italy, bnl organises<br />

around 1,000 events every year.<br />

in 2009, bnl raised m<strong>on</strong>ey in new ways,<br />

such as encouraging people to d<strong>on</strong>ate<br />

0.5% of their m<strong>on</strong>thly income to teleth<strong>on</strong><br />

or to pay for their m<strong>on</strong>thly expenditure<br />

by credit card.<br />

the bnp paribas foundati<strong>on</strong><br />

is a partner of the new<br />

“land and sea” scientific project<br />

being undertaken by la Boudeuse,<br />

a three‑masted scho<strong>on</strong>er, which<br />

began in october 2009. the aim<br />

of the project is to study the main<br />

aspects of sustainable<br />

development <strong>on</strong> the seas<br />

and rivers of south America<br />

and the pacific ocean. in this new<br />

missi<strong>on</strong>, around 15 experts will be<br />

sailing <strong>on</strong> la Boudeuse, led by<br />

patrice franceschi. in south<br />

america, scientists will focus<br />

<strong>on</strong> assessing the envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

impact of rubber producti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

the c<strong>on</strong>sequences of the growth<br />

in organised tourism in india,<br />

problems related to mercury<br />

polluti<strong>on</strong> in rivers caused by gold<br />

explorers, the development of<br />

unregulated urban development<br />

and the study of biodiversity.<br />

in the pacific ocean, the aim will<br />

be to study and propose soluti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

to preserve “disappearing<br />

islands” in view of climate<br />

change and the likely increase<br />

in sea levels.
