maintaining core<br />
competencies<br />
although the group relies <strong>on</strong> outside<br />
suppliers for products and services that<br />
are not central to its businesses, it has<br />
chosen to retain c<strong>on</strong>trol over its core<br />
competencies. Producti<strong>on</strong> processes<br />
remain highly integrated, thus limiting<br />
the use of outsourcing.<br />
in the it field, where outsourcing is<br />
comm<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g financial instituti<strong>on</strong>s,<br />
bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> has adopted a unique approach<br />
by creating a joint venture with<br />
ibm france to meet its it processing requirements.<br />
this strategic alliance allows<br />
the group to retain c<strong>on</strong>trol over technology<br />
while reducing its it costs, and<br />
to maintain a leading-edge centre of<br />
excellence.<br />
Worldwide management<br />
of the purchasing<br />
functi<strong>on</strong><br />
in line with the group’s general approach,<br />
bnP <strong>Paribas</strong> has always placed<br />
major importance <strong>on</strong> the social and<br />
envir<strong>on</strong>mental resp<strong>on</strong>sibility of its<br />
suppliers.<br />
since 2001, the group has applied c<strong>on</strong>duct<br />
and professi<strong>on</strong>al ethics rules to its<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>ships with suppliers. these rules<br />
create strict obligati<strong>on</strong>s of c<strong>on</strong>fidentiality,<br />
transparency and fairness <strong>on</strong> all staff<br />
involved in selecting suppliers.<br />
since 2002, all c<strong>on</strong>tracts negotiated and<br />
signed by the group have c<strong>on</strong>tained<br />
clauses relating to social and envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
matters. as regards social aspects,<br />
these clauses require compliance<br />
with internati<strong>on</strong>al labour organisati<strong>on</strong><br />
(ilo) standards and with nati<strong>on</strong>al employment<br />
legislati<strong>on</strong> if this legislati<strong>on</strong> is<br />
stricter than the ilo standards.<br />
since 2006, the group has performed<br />
periodic risk m<strong>on</strong>itoring <strong>on</strong> listed suppliers.<br />
this includes analysing indicators<br />
relating to ethics and envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
protecti<strong>on</strong>. csr criteria have also been<br />
gradually integrated into the supplier<br />
selecti<strong>on</strong> process in certain product<br />
categories:<br />
— Hardware: invitati<strong>on</strong> to tender for the<br />
supply of Pcs, including sustainable<br />
development requirements;<br />
— Printers: pre-qualificati<strong>on</strong> of suppliers<br />
based <strong>on</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental management,<br />
manufacturing processes and<br />
eco-certificati<strong>on</strong>;<br />
— office supplies and paper: Pefccertified<br />
paper (1) for printing and<br />
copying and for electr<strong>on</strong>ic publishing<br />
centres in france;<br />
— vehicle leasing: inclusi<strong>on</strong> of low-co 2- emissi<strong>on</strong> cars in the vehicle catalogue<br />
with the additi<strong>on</strong> of the toyota<br />
Prius in 2009.<br />
finally, the group’s purchasing teams<br />
have launched various initiatives in this<br />
area in the last few years:<br />
— arval has introduced a sustainable<br />
development charter for its<br />
suppliers.<br />
— in italy, bnl has carried out an awareness-raising<br />
campaign to reduce paper<br />
c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>. in additi<strong>on</strong>, a catalogue<br />
of green office supplies has<br />
been compiled, and multifuncti<strong>on</strong><br />
printers that save energy and lead<br />
to lower co emissi<strong>on</strong>s have been<br />

selected. “green certificates” have<br />
been bought from enel energia, guaranteeing<br />
that a defined proporti<strong>on</strong><br />
of energy c<strong>on</strong>sumed comes from renewable<br />
sources. <strong>on</strong>e of bnP <strong>Paribas</strong><br />
milan’s buildings is equipped with<br />
sensors that improve electricity management.<br />
the group also uses a<br />
company that employs people in a<br />
sheltered workshop to process waste,<br />
and reports annually to bnP <strong>Paribas</strong><br />
staff about reducti<strong>on</strong>s in paper, water<br />
and energy c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

— itP arf supports projects led by business<br />
lines and the it department.<br />
these projects include digitising documents,<br />
reducing energy c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong><br />
and using video c<strong>on</strong>ferencing in<br />
order to reduce business travel.<br />
— in all entities, processes for the recycling<br />
of t<strong>on</strong>ers and ink cartridges<br />
have been introduced, in accordance<br />
with local legislati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
in 2009, the Purchasing department<br />
strengthened and increased the scope<br />
of its governance system, and placed<br />
greater importance <strong>on</strong> sustainable development<br />
in the purchasing process. a<br />
guide to purchasing standards was distributed<br />
to all group purchasing teams<br />
in 2009. the guide includes compulsory<br />
rules and csr standards.<br />
a sustainable development team has<br />
been set up within the Purchasing<br />
department in order to extend the sustainable<br />
development approach and<br />
make it more systematic, and to coordinate<br />
acti<strong>on</strong>s taken by the various<br />
teams in this area. a sustainable development<br />
charter covering all group purchasing<br />
teams will be distributed. csr<br />
criteria will be integrated into the various<br />
phases of the purchasing process, from<br />
the definiti<strong>on</strong> of the purchasing strategy<br />
(defining ways of reducing expenditure)<br />
to the selecti<strong>on</strong> of suppliers (systematically<br />
including csr criteria in invitati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
to tender, with minimum weightings).<br />
supplier csr ratings will be expanded,<br />
csr performance indicators will be defined<br />
and csr issues will be included in<br />
the training of all purchasing staff from<br />
2010 <strong>on</strong>wards.<br />
