�2.7 – <strong>International</strong> Fax<strong>Post</strong><br />

<strong>International</strong> Fax<strong>Post</strong> is the international public access<br />

service for the transmission and delivery of document<br />

facsimiles to more than 40 countries.<br />

�2.7.1 – <strong>International</strong> Fax<strong>Post</strong> definitions<br />

PSTN<br />

PSTN is the Public Switched Telecommunications Network that provides access to:<br />

� Subscriber Trunk Dialling (STD) and local calls within <strong>Australia</strong><br />

� <strong>International</strong> Direct Dialling (IDD) for direct connection to international telephone numbers.<br />

CCITT Group 3<br />

CCITT Group 3 is the international standard for fax machines used by <strong>International</strong> Fax<strong>Post</strong><br />

Fax Centre<br />

A Fax Centre is an office of <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>Post</strong> or an overseas postal administration equipped with a<br />

facsimile machine and connected to the <strong>International</strong> Direct Dialling (IDD) facility.<br />

Original document<br />

An original document is a document accepted at a <strong>Post</strong> Office for facsimile transmission.<br />

Facsimile document<br />

A facsimile document is the reproduced copy of an original document after facsimile transmission.<br />

�2.7.2 – Scope of <strong>International</strong> Fax<strong>Post</strong><br />

<strong>International</strong> Fax<strong>Post</strong> is available for document transmission only via PSTN.<br />

It is not available for document transmission to:<br />

� any country that is not connected to the IDD network – refer to the White Pages telephone<br />

directory<br />

� any mobile telephone served by either an <strong>Australia</strong>n-based or an overseas-based network<br />

� any satellite telecommunications network – such as INMARSAT, which provides telephone<br />

connection to ships at sea.<br />

�2.7.3 – Maximum document size<br />

<strong>International</strong> Fax<strong>Post</strong> transmits documents up to B4 size – 250 mm × 353 mm.<br />

�2.7.4 – Original document quality<br />

The original document:<br />

� must have a margin on all sides of at least 10 mm<br />

� if a multi-page document, should have pages sequentially numbered<br />

� must be capable of satisfactory reproduction – for example, white paper containing bold black<br />

type or graphics, or handwriting and drawings in black ink.<br />

Some colours (particularly some shades of blue) do not reproduce well. If Fax Centre staff have<br />

doubts about the reproductive quality of a document, they should endorse the transmittal sheet<br />

TRANSMITTED AT SENDER'S RISK, and ask the sender to sign the endorsement.<br />

�2.7.5 – Document contents<br />

Fax Centre staff may refuse a document for transmission if it contains material that a reasonable<br />

person could regard as offensive or defamatory or as material that could be used to menace or harass<br />

another person.<br />

�2.7.6 – Over-the-counter Lodgement<br />

Senders can lodge an original document over the counter at any <strong>Post</strong> Office. They must accept the<br />

terms and conditions by completing a transmittal sheet, which the <strong>Post</strong> Office transmits with the<br />

document.<br />
