�4.2 – Defence Forces mail<br />

Standard <strong>International</strong> <strong>Post</strong> charges and<br />

conditions apply to all articles addressed to<br />

members of the Defence Forces serving<br />

overseas, except as specified below.<br />

�4.2.1 – Eligibility for within-<strong>Australia</strong> post charges<br />

The following categories of mail addressed to <strong>Australia</strong>n Defence Force personnel overseas are<br />

eligible for within-<strong>Australia</strong> post charges and conditions:<br />

� official Naval mail<br />

� articles addressed to or from a member of the Defence Forces serving on board an HMA ship<br />

overseas<br />

� articles addressed to or from a member of the Defence Forces at an AFPO (<strong>Australia</strong>n Forces<br />

<strong>Post</strong> Office).<br />

<strong>Australia</strong> <strong>Post</strong> assesses all post charges for delivery to the <strong>International</strong> Mail Centre in NSW.<br />

If a member of the Defence Forces overseas is neither on board an HMA ship nor at an AFPO,<br />

standard <strong>International</strong> <strong>Post</strong> charges and conditions apply.<br />

�4.2.2 – Registered <strong>Post</strong> and Extra Cover<br />

Within-<strong>Australia</strong> Registered <strong>Post</strong> and Extra Cover services are available to mail addressed to an HMA<br />

ship or an AFPO in accordance with �4.2.5 – Addressing. The service is provided from point of<br />

lodgement through to receipt at the Defence Force facility in New South Wales 2890.<br />

�4.2.3 – Customs documentation<br />

HMA ships<br />

Articles addressed to an HMA ship do not need a customs declaration.<br />

AFPO<br />

Articles addressed to an AFPO, other than letters containing only correspondence or documents,<br />

require a customs declaration.<br />

�4.2.4 – Prohibitions and restrictions<br />

The prohibitions and restrictions for each country in Section 6 of this <strong>Post</strong> <strong>Guide</strong> also apply to<br />

articles posted to an HMA ship or AFPO located in that country.<br />

�4.2.5 – Addressing<br />

To attract within-<strong>Australia</strong> post charges, senders must address mail as shown below.<br />

�4.2.6 – Contents and packaging<br />

Articles sent to an HMA ship overseas or an AFPO could be subject to extreme climatic conditions<br />

over a lengthy delivery period. Do not include perishable articles that are likely to deteriorate or<br />

liquefy before delivery.<br />

Ensure that all items are well packed and protected. Refer to �5.6 – Contents and Packaging.<br />

All conditions of the Dangerous and Prohibited Goods and Packaging <strong>Post</strong> <strong>Guide</strong> apply to postal<br />

articles addressed to an HMA ship or an AFPO. <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>Post</strong> prohibits matches of any kind in the<br />

post.
