many as about five per cent of the work <strong>for</strong>ce in sericulture families ,<br />

who are involved in higher salaried jobs.<br />

Sericulture Adoption and Per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

A successful operation of sericulture involves intensive ef<strong>for</strong>ts<br />

with effective inputs, contributing to its development in all its<br />

dimensions, involving its improvement in breadth, depth and length. The<br />

breadth implies its adoption or expansion. The depth implies its volume<br />

or productivity. The length implies its longevity or sustainability.<br />

Expansion and sustainability constitute the two sides of the same coin.<br />

In a way, both are very much related to one another and are very much<br />

affected by similar factors. Productivity, which is also affected by<br />

similar and related factors, is itself one of the crucial factors in<br />

expansion and sustainability (Gregory 1994c).<br />

An analysis of the various factors affecting the adoption and<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance of sericulture is essential in understanding the process of<br />

sericulture in a wider perspective. The ef<strong>for</strong>t here is to basically look at<br />

sericulture and its development through socio-economic and cultural<br />

factors. It is complementary to the perspective that looks at society and<br />

the socio-cultural institutions and relations through sericulture, which<br />

<strong>for</strong>ms the second part of this study.<br />

Studies have shown that sericulture has proved to be highly<br />

remuneratIve with high yield returns (e.g., Hanumappa 1986;<br />

Rajapurohit and Govindaraju 1986). However, remuneration and high<br />

returns are subject to variation, depending on certain factors. Sericulture<br />
