'convent school' in the village itself where quite a few children<br />

attended. The school was closed within a year, mainly <strong>for</strong> want of<br />

students. Most of the children attending the school switched over to the<br />

local vernacular medium school. A few, however, continued their<br />

education at the English medium school, located at the nearby village, at<br />

a distance of about two kilometres. Nevertheless, the 'convent culture'<br />

indicates a change in the value-orientation of these people. Engaging<br />

private tutors, starting from primary education is becoming an essential<br />

part of the educational system emerging in this village.<br />

~igration:<br />

Today, a good number of marginal land-holders and<br />

landless, especially from Vanniar and Scheduled castes have moved out<br />

of the village, particularly in the late seventies and early eighties. This<br />

was when the district was continuously facing severe drought situation,<br />

pushing them out in search of better pastures (<strong>for</strong> more details see<br />

chapter 5 on Labour Relations, Strategies and Prospects). These were<br />

the people, who <strong>for</strong>med a good chunk of the traditional agriculture<br />

labour class. Most of them migrated as individuals and some of them<br />

later took their families also along with them. A majority of them landed<br />

in Bangalore as construction workers. Many of them continue to visit<br />

their village occasionally, especially during the agricultural operations<br />

and on festive occasions.<br />

Village Living and Interaction<br />

Seripura still continues to have certain traditional features of<br />

Indian villages. Some of the traditional services are still continued. The<br />

village does have a barber (Navithan), a few washermen (Ehali) and<br />
