CHANGING VALUES<br />

The impact of Sericulture in tenus of income and employment<br />

generation has been a fact well established by many studies as seen in<br />

the introductory Chapter. However, the nature and level of its impact on<br />

different sections of people and its socio-cultural implications have not<br />

been anempted by earlier studies. It is also essential to look into the<br />

impact of sericulture, on aspects like education, health and cultural<br />

beliefs.<br />

Socio-Economic Mobility<br />

'People everywhere respond to economic incentives, perceiving<br />

their significance in much the same way as the managers' (Gabriel<br />

1991:2). This response is not the same by all sections of society, which<br />

have different socio-economic conditions. In the absence of favourable<br />

opportunities, economic improvement is impossible <strong>for</strong> some. Moreover,<br />

economic improvement itself is only a part of total development though<br />

it serves many times as a first step in the total social development. In this<br />

process, while the social conditions of certain sections could come in the<br />

way of participating in a development programme, the result of a<br />

development programme itself could be multi-fold and varied. There<br />

have been various ef<strong>for</strong>ts, governmental and non-governmental, to create<br />

favourable conditions through various rural development programmes.<br />

Sericulrure is said to be one of the very successful ef<strong>for</strong>ts of rural<br />
