Chapter II presents a profile of the 'Field and the People',<br />

describing the physical setting of Seripura, portraying the demographic<br />

and the socio-cultural characteristics of its people. It also briefly<br />

introduces the other villages from which evidence is taken into<br />

consideration <strong>for</strong> purpose of comparison.<br />

Chapter III describes the 'Land and Economc Diversification',<br />

looking into its occupational diversification and commercialisation. It<br />

gives a field-mapping and land distribution pattern across different<br />

communities and among various crops including mulberry plantation<br />

that <strong>for</strong>ms the base <strong>for</strong> sericulture. Chapter IV 'Sericulture Process: A<br />

Profile' portrays the rearing features of sericulture, traces the origin and<br />

development of sericulture in Seripura, looks into the socio-economic<br />

characteristics of the sericulture families and participants and analyses<br />

the factors influencing the adoption and per<strong>for</strong>mance of sericulture.<br />

Chapter V deals with the 'Labour Relations, Strategies and<br />

Prospects' in the context of sericulture. It analyses the labour status and<br />

demand in the village, looking into sericulture and other competing<br />

crops. It also portrays the typology of rural labour, considering the<br />

bases of such typology and identifYing the caste-class variations. It<br />

further analyses the labour management and strategies and looks into the<br />

labour prospects in sericulture.<br />

Chapter VI attempts to deal with the 'Family Dynamics and<br />

Gender Relations', in the context of sericulture, looking into the intra-<br />
