Literacy and Education: Table 2.4 portrays the literacy and the<br />

educational scenario of Seripura. As the table reveals, the literate (the<br />

post school literate, together with the studying) <strong>for</strong>m about 54 per cent<br />

of the population, which is quite high as compared to the district average<br />

of just 29 per cent. Of the studying population, there are only thirteen<br />

students (about 1.4 per cent) who have crossed the secondary education.<br />

Of theIn, eleven are studying at the higher secondary level. More than 25<br />

per cent of the population, in the age group between 5 and 14 years,<br />

have been already out of the school. Many have dropped out at the<br />

primary and higher primary levels. Most of them again belong to the<br />

lower castes. The reason <strong>for</strong> drop-out has been mainly <strong>for</strong> economic<br />

reasons and to look after the younger ones while the mother is out <strong>for</strong><br />

wage labour. Of the post school-literates, about a little less than onethirds<br />

(about eight per cent) have hardly completed their primary<br />

education and about half of the literate (about 12.4 per cent) have never<br />

crossed the primary level. There are two graduates from the village who<br />

are working in the near-by town and residing there itself. There is an<br />

engineering graduate who has recently completed his studies. He is<br />

presently doing farming and sericulture activity while looking <strong>for</strong> a<br />

placement. There is also a research scholar who is pursuing his doctoral<br />

studies at the Annamalai University. Apart from theIn, there is an<br />

engineer working in HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) at Bangalore<br />

and an advocate, based in Bangalore. Both belong to the Scheduled caste<br />

and have settled in Bangalore.<br />

There are a few children who attend the English medium nursery<br />

school located in the nearby village. A few years back, there was a<br />
