The relation could be called a symmetric relation when the<br />

interacting persons are in the same plane with similar reciprocity. The<br />

relations could be asymmetric, when the interacting persons are playing<br />

different but socially accepted roles. Those relations which lack<br />

reciprocity would fall in the category of non-symmetrical relations. In<br />

addition, there are also relations between individuals, that are unequal<br />

and sometimes even exploitative, which may be termed as dysymmetric.<br />

The Focus of the Research: There is a two-way interaction<br />

between sericulture and society. The development objective of<br />

sericulture has involved a dual perspective, namely, development of<br />

sericulture through society, and development of society through<br />

sericulture. Some ef<strong>for</strong>ts have been made to identify both these<br />

processes in the present research. However, the major objective of this<br />

study is, as has already been stated, to look into process of change in the<br />

context of sericulture with a socio-cultural perspective. In other words, it<br />

is looking into some of the socio-cultural processes that have set in with<br />

the advent of sericulture. These processes are discerned mainly in the<br />

labour and dependency relations, interaction dynamics of family<br />

relations, socio-economic mobility and value dynamics and in the social<br />

and network relations.<br />

Theoretical Perspective<br />

The present study attempts to identify the various key players in<br />

the different social institutions. It also looks into the governing<br />

principles and cultural implications as well as the nature and impact of<br />

the various interactional ties in the dynamic set-up of the village within<br />
