activity, the main activity has been distinguished from the subsidiary<br />

activities. The level of involvement in an activity has been decided<br />

mainly by the amount of time relatively devoted to different activities in<br />

a year.<br />

The dependency ratio per 100 work <strong>for</strong>ce is 55. Tbey mostly<br />

consist of the pre-school children and the studying population as well as<br />

the older people. Looking at the activity profile by land-holding status,<br />

the dependency ratio among the landless is below that of the landholders.<br />

Looking across sex status, there is no marked variation in the<br />

dependency ratio from the general population.<br />

Those who are engaged in agriculture account <strong>for</strong> about 63 per<br />

cent of the working population, <strong>for</strong> about one fourth of whom, it is a<br />

main activity. Looking across the population by land-holding status,<br />

about three fourths of the work <strong>for</strong>ce among the land-holders are<br />

engaged in agriculture work. There is no marked difference in the<br />

proportion of those <strong>for</strong> whom agriculture is the main activity. As <strong>for</strong><br />

gender factor, the distribution is almost proportional, with a slight<br />

variation in favour of males. Agriculture as the main activity, clearly<br />

favours the males with about 25 per cent of them involving in it, as<br />

against just about 5 per cent of the females.<br />

About <strong>for</strong>ty-four per cent of the work <strong>for</strong>ce have been reported to<br />

be involved in household activity. Looking at the gender factor, the<br />

activity is almost confmed to females alone, involving more than 90 per<br />

cent of the female work <strong>for</strong>ce. It also <strong>for</strong>ms as a main activity <strong>for</strong> about<br />

two thirds of the total female work <strong>for</strong>ce, manifesting strict adherence to<br />

the traditional role of women. This activity still remains as an invisible<br />
