sericulturists would like to develop an open animosity with the extension<br />

staff, barring exceptions. This is because they would not like to lose any<br />

benefit that may come on their way, by losing the favour of the<br />

extension staff. The progressive sericulturists too do not antagonise the<br />

extension staff lest they lose the proximity with higher officials. The<br />

same is true of the extension staff also, who too try to maintain a cordial<br />

relationship with the sericulturists.<br />

The other major avenues of interaction with the department<br />

officials would include the occasions of regular procurement of layings<br />

and of marketing of the cocoons. Apart from this, most of the<br />

sericulturists have the opportunity <strong>for</strong> training programmes unlike the<br />

non-sericulturists. In reality, not every training programme achieves its<br />

intended results because of the less insistence of attendance and the<br />

distant location of the training spots. Another area of interaction with<br />

officials is associated with credit interactions.<br />

All these avenues of interaction bring a high level of recognition<br />

<strong>for</strong> the village-folk. In the process, the sericulturists develop wider<br />

contact and gain rich experience and knowledge. This is evident from<br />

the interaction level and maturity of the sericulturists in different<br />

villages of study.<br />

Network Analysis<br />

J .A. Barnes (1972: 26-7) identifies three main types of relations<br />

in the network interactions. They include the symmetric, asymmetric and<br />

non-symmetric relations. It is, however, not very clear, how the non-<br />
