products profitably is key to the economic viability of the Trail Operations.
A major modernization program was begun in the late 70’s and was completed in
1997 with the start-up of a new lead smelter using state-of-art Kivcet oxygen
flash smelting technology. This eliminated several major emission sources
associated with old smelter and reduced overall plant emissions substantially.
2.6.2. Sherritt International Corporation
Sherritt International Corporation 36,37 is a diversified Canadian public company
with assets of $2 billion. Sherritt International Corporation operates in Canada,
the Republic of Cuba, and internationally.
Sherritt's span of operations includes an indirect 50% interest in Luscar Energy
Partnership which owns Luscar Ltd., Canada's largest coal producer; exploration,
development and production of oil and natural gas reserves worldwide; a 50%
indirect interest in a vertically-integrated commodity nickel/cobalt metals
business; and investments in power-generation, communications, soybean
processing, tourism and agriculture in Cuba.
Luscar Ltd. is Canada's largest coal company and one of the largest coal
producers in North America. Luscar mines approximately 37 million tonnes of
coal per year which is shipped to utilities, steelmakers and industrial companies
in Canada and abroad.
Sherritt International Corporation owns 50% of a vertically integrated commodity
nickel and cobalt business. This metals enterprise consists of three companies:
• Moa Nickel S.A., which has mining and associated processing facilities
at Moa Bay, Cuba;
• International Cobalt Company Inc. of Nassau, Bahamas, which is the
worldwide sales and marketing organization; and
• The Cobalt Refinery Company Inc. (Corefco), which owns and operates
the Metals Refinery at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.

producing fertilizers as well as providing utilities and services for the Metals
