On October 31 st his camp was attacked by the Germans. His comrades<br />

were killed but Hillel survived by pretending to be dead. He lay wounded<br />

<strong>for</strong> four days until his partisan friends found him <strong>and</strong> took him to a cabin<br />

in the mountains. Ukrainian soldiers who worked <strong>for</strong> the Germans found<br />

him there. Thanks to the <strong>for</strong>ged documents he carried, they did not find<br />

out his real identity. Hillel was transferred to the hospital in Banská<br />

Bystrica <strong>and</strong> underwent several operations on his leg. In May 1945 he<br />

was liberated by the Red Army.<br />

In 1947, with <strong>for</strong>ged documents, he arrived in Eretz Israel (Palestine) as a<br />

pilgrim. He moved to Zürich to study medicine. He was a neurosurgeon.<br />

Hillel returned to Israel in 1995.<br />

Halász Joseph<br />

Perished in Auschwitz in 1944<br />

Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<br />

Joseph was a member of the movement from 1939. In 1942 he moved to<br />

Hungary <strong>and</strong> became an underground activist. In 1944 he returned to<br />

Slovakia <strong>and</strong> joined the partisans. Joseph took part in the Bukovec battle.<br />

He was caught (Haviva Reick was also caught there) but managed to<br />

escape <strong>and</strong> reach Bratislava. Joseph fell ill <strong>and</strong> was hospitalized. He was<br />

caught in the hospital <strong>and</strong> deported to Auschwitz.<br />

Halevi Hava<br />

Born in Kiskunhalas in 1929<br />

Member of “Hanoar Hatzioni”<br />

When the Germans occupied Hungary on 19.3.1944, Hava obtained a<br />

<strong>for</strong>ged Christian document. Her family moved to a “Yellow Star House”.<br />

Hava distributed Protection Documents to those who needed them. On<br />

June 26 th , Hava <strong>and</strong> her sister decided to cross the border into Romania.<br />

They were caught <strong>and</strong> incarcerated in various prisons <strong>for</strong> over two<br />

months <strong>and</strong> in one of them they met Hanna Szenes. As they were<br />

minors, they were released at the beginning of September by the<br />

International Red Cross. After her release Hava joined the underground<br />

<strong>and</strong> distributed documents at railway stations where Jewish <strong>for</strong>ced labor<br />

<strong>Brothers</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Resistance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> 127
