he met Rafi Benshalom, who enlisted him in the underground. He took
part in the rescue of Jewish young men from the forced labor units and in
moving people from the Yellow Star Houses. Yehuda was caught in
November 1944 while trying to rescue Jews from a “transport” at the
railway station in Újpest, a suburb of Budapest. He was tortured with
electric shocks but after a few days he managed to escape and resumed
his activities with the underground until the city was liberated by the Red
Army in January 1945.
Yehuda made aliya at the end of 1945 and joined Kibbutz Yehiam where
he stayed until 1957. He resides in Jerusalem.

In 1943 Hava was sent to Ungvár in order to set up the “Hashomer
Hatzair” ken there. In 1944 she smuggled Jews into Romania (tiyul) in
the Nagyvárad area. Hava was caught together with Eli Sajó, a
member of “Maccabi Hatzair” and sent to Auschwitz and other
extermination camps.
After the liberation Hava stayed first in Sweden, then in Cyprus and
made aliya in 1947. She lives in Kibbutz Ga’aton.

Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”
Between 1940 and 1943, Joseph took care of groups of children within
the framework of the “Hashomer Hatzair” movement. He was enlisted in a
forced labor unit but managed to escape. Joseph joined the underground
and was sent to work in the children’s house on 90, Dob Street which
was under the protection of the International Red Cross in Budapest.
After the liberation Joseph was in charge, in Germany, of a group of
about 200 children who were going to make aliya. He himself made aliya
in 1947. Joseph is a member of Kibbutz Ga’aton. For many years he was
a teacher. He is now in charge of the kibbutz archives. Joseph is also an
artist.
