he met Rafi Benshalom, who enlisted him in the underground. He took<br />

part in the rescue of Jewish young men from the <strong>for</strong>ced labor units <strong>and</strong> in<br />

moving people from the Yellow Star Houses. Yehuda was caught in<br />

November 1944 while trying to rescue Jews from a “transport” at the<br />

railway station in Újpest, a suburb of Budapest. He was tortured with<br />

electric shocks but after a few days he managed to escape <strong>and</strong> resumed<br />

his activities with the underground until the city was liberated by the Red<br />

Army in January 1945.<br />

Yehuda made aliya at the end of 1945 <strong>and</strong> joined Kibbutz Yehiam where<br />

he stayed until 1957. He resides in Jerusalem.<br />

Died on 9.3.2009 in Israel<br />

Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<br />

In 1943 Hava was sent to Ungvár in order to set up the “Hashomer<br />

Hatzair” ken there. In 1944 she smuggled Jews into Romania (tiyul) in<br />

the Nagyvárad area. Hava was caught together with Eli Sajó, a<br />

member of “Maccabi Hatzair” <strong>and</strong> sent to Auschwitz <strong>and</strong> other<br />

extermination camps.<br />

After the liberation Hava stayed first in Sweden, then in Cyprus <strong>and</strong><br />

made aliya in 1947. She lives in Kibbutz Ga’aton.<br />

Ben-Porat Joseph,‘Yusuf'<br />

Born in Budapest on 23.9.1923<br />

Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<br />

Between 1940 <strong>and</strong> 1943, Joseph took care of groups of children within<br />

the framework of the “Hashomer Hatzair” movement. He was enlisted in a<br />

<strong>for</strong>ced labor unit but managed to escape. Joseph joined the underground<br />

<strong>and</strong> was sent to work in the children’s house on 90, Dob Street which<br />

was under the protection of the International Red Cross in Budapest.<br />

After the liberation Joseph was in charge, in Germany, of a group of<br />

about 200 children who were going to make aliya. He himself made aliya<br />

in 1947. Joseph is a member of Kibbutz Ga’aton. For many years he was<br />

a teacher. He is now in charge of the kibbutz archives. Joseph is also an<br />

artist.<br />
