Schlesinger Yaffe Gabriel<br />
Born in 1896<br />
Died in 1979 in Israel<br />
Member of "Mizrahi"<br />
In 1919 Yaffe founded the “Young Mizrahi” in Hungary <strong>and</strong> from 1920 to<br />
1922 he was its chairman. In 1943 he was vice-chairman of the Keren<br />
Kayemet LeIsrael. He held the position of finance comptroller <strong>for</strong> the<br />
Relief <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> Committee <strong>and</strong> was a member of the Eretz-Israel<br />
Committee (Pal-Amt) that helped Jewish refugees arriving in Hungary.<br />
Yaffe left Hungary in June 1944 on the train of the Relief <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong><br />
Committee <strong>and</strong> made aliya in 1945 with his wife, Ziszl, <strong>and</strong> their daughter<br />
Tova. In 1952 Yaffe was the chief secretary of the rabbinical tribunal in<br />
Tel-Aviv/Jaffa.<br />

Ziszl took part in her husb<strong>and</strong>’s, Schlesinger Yaffe Gabriel, activities. She<br />
was active with the "Mizrahi" women. She left Hungary in June 1944 on<br />
the train of the Relief <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> Committee <strong>and</strong> made aliya.<br />
Schönwald Benjamin Haim<br />
Born in Sátoraljaújhely on 15.10.1922<br />
Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<br />
Benjamin’s family was religious. In 1943 he was enlisted in a <strong>for</strong>ced labor<br />
unit. He escaped <strong>and</strong> hid at his older bother’s house in the village of<br />
Nagymuzsaj (Muzsijeve) in the Carpatho-Ruthenia region Mountains. In<br />
April 1944 Benjamin was discovered by Hungarian gendarmes, arrested<br />
but, eventually, managed to escape <strong>and</strong> arrive to Budapest by train.<br />
After meeting Rafi Benshalom <strong>and</strong> Efra Agmon, who were members of<br />
“Hashomer Hatzair”, Benjamin joined the members of the movement<br />
staying at the “Glass House” on 29, Vadász Street <strong>and</strong> soon integrated<br />
the underground activities. He walked the streets of the city wearing an<br />
Arrow Cross armb<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> took Jews out of places where they were at<br />
risk to the “Glass House”. After the liberation (18.1.1945) Benjamin<br />
obtained food <strong>for</strong> Jewish orphans. He made aliya. Benjamin resides in<br />
Nataniya.<br />
