Aliya Bet: A term denoting illegal emigration movement to Eretz Israel (Palestine) during the British<br />

m<strong>and</strong>ate, which allowed immigration within a certain quota only (see: Certificate)<br />

Aliya: Hebrew <strong>for</strong> ascent; a term commonly used to denote the emigration of Jews to Palestine<br />

(Israel).<br />

Aliyat Hanoar: "Youth Aliya" – a special project of the Zionist movement <strong>for</strong> organized<br />

immigration of Jewish youth to Eretz Israel (Palestine) <strong>and</strong> Israel, <strong>and</strong> their education in<br />

the spirit of fulfillment of the Zionist idea.<br />

Arrow Cross Party: The Hungarian Nazi Party headed by Ferenc Szálasi, who came to power<br />

in Hungary in October 1944.<br />

B’riha: Hebrew <strong>for</strong> flight, an organized operation to rescue Jewish survivors of the Holocaust from<br />

various countries in Europe, on their way to Eretz Israel.<br />

Certificate: A <strong>for</strong>mal document, which permits the entry of Jews into Eretz Israel (Palestine) during<br />

the British m<strong>and</strong>ate, issued by the British administration in Palestine.<br />

Department A: A section within the International Red Cross in Hungary active in rescue <strong>and</strong><br />

protection of Jewish children in Budapest.<br />

Eretz Israel: In Hebrew The L<strong>and</strong> of Israel, synonymous to Palestine prior to the establishment<br />

of the State of Israel.<br />

Forced Labor Service: Legally established companies in Hungary. Mainly Jews served in<br />

these companies in lieu of compulsory military service.<br />

Glass House: A house on Vadász Street 29 in Budapest, owing its name to the unusual<br />

combination of its glass windows, roof <strong>and</strong> door. Artur Weiss, the owner, put the house at<br />

the disposal of the Swiss consulate. In October 1944 it became a shelter <strong>for</strong> Jews<br />

protected by the Swiss consulate in Budapest.<br />

Hagana: The Jewish underground army from which the Israeli army was evolved after the<br />

establishment of the State of Israel.<br />
