framework of the Joint <strong>and</strong> UNRRA. Pinhas participated in the 22nd<br />

Zionist Congress in Basel. He married Sarah Stern, a Holocaust survivor<br />

who left Hungary on the train of the Relief <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> Committee. He<br />

was appointed as the manager of the Eretz-Israel Office in Geneva. In<br />

Switzerl<strong>and</strong> he founded finance companies as well as a bank. Pinhas<br />

held a senior position in the high institutions of the Zionist movement.<br />

Shmuel studied in a Czech <strong>and</strong> a Hungarian school. In 1943 he moved to<br />

Budapest <strong>and</strong> joined “Hehalutz Hatzair”, the future “Dror Habonim”. He<br />

learned knitting <strong>and</strong> earned a living from various jobs. In January-<br />

February 1944 Shmuel shared an apartment with his brother, Moshe, <strong>and</strong><br />

Tzvi Prizant. Together they planned rescue <strong>and</strong> resistance operations.<br />

After the Germans invaded Hungary on 19.3.1944, Shmuel went<br />

underground with <strong>for</strong>ged documents. In June he was enlisted in a <strong>for</strong>ced<br />

labor unit <strong>and</strong> served in Dés. In August Shmuel <strong>and</strong> a group of comrades<br />

had the opportunity to escape <strong>and</strong> reach Budapest with <strong>for</strong>ged<br />

documents brought to them by a member of the movement, Pál Ernø.<br />

However, the group decided not to run away because the Red Army was<br />

approaching <strong>and</strong> they hoped to be liberated. Shmuel was taken prisoner<br />

by Romanian soldiers, taken to Alba-Julia (Gyulafehérvár) but liberated<br />

with his friends by the local Jews. He arrived in Italy, enlisted in the<br />

Palmah <strong>and</strong> did military training.<br />

In 1947 Shmuel made aliya <strong>and</strong> joined Kibbutz Givat Brenner. He resides<br />

in Ramat-Gan.<br />
