EPILOGUE
This book is dedicated to the memory of Tzvi Goldfarb, friend and leader, who passed away in
1977, about four years after his son, Uri, fell in battle in the Yom Kippur War.
Tzvi knew the horrors of the Holocaust in his fatherland, Poland. In 1942 he was sent by his
movement, “Dror”, to Hungary in order to warn the Jews of what lay in store for them from the Nazis
and to prepare them for resistance and rescue. Tzvi stayed for almost one year in Slovakia and only
then did he manage to reach Budapest. In the Hungarian capital he operated under a false name
and immediately carried out his mission. He initiated the establishment of bunkers, was an active
partner in the planning of the tiyul, the release of comrades from forced labor camps and many
other activities. I had the chance to know Tzvi, to respect him, to work with him and under his
instructions. Tzvi was a close friend and an exceptional person. On one of the missions, Tzvi,
Neshka, his girlfriend (and future wife) and myself were caught by the fascists. We suffered brutal
torture and were going to be executed. We were freed by a daring operation of the Zionist Youth
underground. After the war too we worked together and were members of Kibbutz Parod. Neshka,
who passed away in the year 2000, was his loyal partner.
The book of biographies of the underground activists is a memorial monument to Tzvi Goldfarb who
was a courageous, determined and wise Jew with friends in the underground many of whom have
passed away.
