Jews, patients <strong>and</strong> staff members, were saved. After the liberation of<br />

Hungary in 1945, Dov was among the founders of the “Oved” movement,<br />

national secretary of “Ha’ihud” <strong>and</strong> among the leaders of the Joint. He left<br />

Hungary in 1948 within the framework of the “Recruitment aliya”. He<br />

made aliya in 1949 <strong>and</strong> held management positions in various hospitals.<br />

He resides in Tel-Aviv.<br />

Shkedi Moshe<br />

M<strong>and</strong>el Dezső<br />

Born on 12.10.1925 in Tolcsva<br />

Member of Hashomer Hatzair<br />

Moshe was raised in an Orthodox family. After the Germans invaded<br />

Hungary (19.3.1944) he was drafted to a <strong>for</strong>ced labor unit. The day after<br />

the "Arrow Cross" took control of Hungary (15.10.1944) he deserted his<br />

unit <strong>and</strong> came into the "Glass House" <strong>and</strong> joined "Hashomer Hatzair".<br />

Moshe was active in delivering Swiss Protection Documents<br />

(Schutzpass) <strong>and</strong> in supplying food to those in the "Glass House". He<br />

was caught in one of his missions <strong>and</strong> taken to the "Arrow Cross"<br />

headquarters, but soon afterwards released. After liberation (18.1.1945)<br />

he joined a "hahshara", made aliya <strong>and</strong> lived <strong>for</strong> a while in a kibbutz.<br />

Upon graduating university studies in education, Moshe was appointed to<br />

the post of national superintendent in the Ministry of Education. [His son,<br />

Eliezer, was chief comm<strong>and</strong>er of the Israeli air <strong>for</strong>ce.]<br />

Singer Joseph<br />

Born in Volóc (Volovec) on 19.5.1923<br />

Died on 19.7.1997 in Israel<br />

Member of “Dror Habonim”<br />

Joseph learned carpentry. He moved to Budapest, where he met Joseph<br />

Gárdos, Neshka <strong>and</strong> Tzvi Goldfarb <strong>and</strong> other “Dror” members. After the<br />

Germans entered Hungary on 19.3.1944, Joseph tried to cross into<br />

Romania by way of the tiyul, was caught <strong>and</strong> incarcerated in various<br />

prisons. At the end of August 1944 members of his movement succeeded<br />

in setting him free. Joseph Singer returned to Budapest <strong>and</strong> served as a<br />

carpenter in setting up his movement’s bunkers on Hungary Boulevard<br />

<strong>and</strong> in H∏vösvölgy. After the Arrow Cross seized the power on<br />

<strong>Brothers</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Resistance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> 223
