Szántó Shmuel<br />

Szántó Andor Miklós<br />

Born in Budapest on 20.12.1922<br />

Member of “Dror Habonim”<br />

Shmuel learned precision mechanics. In 1942 he joined the Zionist<br />

activities in whose framework he met his wife, Hedvig (Hedva) Müller. In<br />

October 1943 he was enlisted in a <strong>for</strong>ced labor unit. In August 1944<br />

Shmuel was wounded <strong>and</strong> hospitalized in Pécs. His wife, who visited him,<br />

brought him <strong>for</strong>ged documents. After the Arrow Cross Party rose to<br />

power on 15.10.1944, Shmuel escaped, arrived in Budapest <strong>and</strong> joined<br />

the underground activities. His role was to take care of the cultural life in<br />

the bunkers that were set up by his movement. He was the editor of the<br />

movement’s underground newspaper. His wife distributed the paper<br />

around the city. In December 1944 Shmuel was caught, taken to the<br />

prison on Margit Boulevard, interrogated <strong>and</strong> tortured. He was liberated<br />

by members of the movement.<br />

Shmuel resides in Rishon LeTzion.<br />

Székely Ernő ‘Marci’<br />

Born in Budapest in 1923<br />

Murdered in 1944<br />

Member of “Maccabi Hatzair”<br />

From 17.4.1944 to 20.9.1944 Marci served in a <strong>for</strong>ced labor camp with<br />

Tzvi Bogen (Keshet). He was among the comrades who found refuge in<br />

the bunker on Hungary Boulevard in Budapest. When the bunker was<br />

attacked by the fascists, he was st<strong>and</strong>ing outside on guard. He shot at<br />

the fascists who returned fire <strong>and</strong> killed him. He died as a hero.<br />

Szendrő Hava<br />

Szendrő (Bruck) Ilona Éva<br />

Born in Budapest in 1925<br />

Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<br />

Hava hid with another twenty Jews in a stalactite cave in Buda on<br />

Szépvölgyi Street in Rózsadomb but they were discovered <strong>and</strong> she was<br />

arrested. At first she was taken to Radeczki Laktanya (military camp) <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Brothers</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Resistance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> 235
