<strong>and</strong> tortured in the military prison on Margit Boulevard, from which he<br />
was released in a daring exploit carried out by his comrades in the<br />
Underground. After liberation, he initiated the posting of a memorial<br />
plaque <strong>for</strong> the paratrooper Hanna Szenes, on the backyard of the Dohány<br />
Street synagogue.Involved in the field of education, Avraham Karni made<br />
aliya in 1946 <strong>and</strong> lived in a kibbutz. He passed away after a long-lasting<br />
illness.<br />

Born in Kassa (Košice) in 1928<br />
Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<br />
Klári arrived in Budapest in 1944 <strong>and</strong> at once integrated the underground<br />
activities. She made contact with the non-Jewish anti-fascist movement.<br />
Her underground name was Niederführer Anna Mária. She was the<br />
liaison between the “Glass House” <strong>and</strong> the members operating in the<br />
underground <strong>and</strong> also transferred <strong>for</strong>ged Swiss Protection Documents.<br />
After the liberation she took part in various activities <strong>for</strong> the movement.<br />
Klári made aliya in 1947 <strong>and</strong> took part in the defense of Kibbutz Ma’anit.<br />
As a member of the “Ehad BeMay” garin she was among the founders of<br />
Kibbutz Yassur. She married Baruh Karni <strong>and</strong> moved to Kibbutz<br />
Hama’apil.<br />

Israel studied at the Jewish high school <strong>and</strong> at university in the<br />
Department of Law in his hometown. He joined the “Barissia” Zionist<br />
youth movement. Israel started working as a journalist in the “Új Kelet”<br />
(New East) Jewish newspaper. In 1937 he married Elizabeth (Bogyó)<br />
Fischer. In September 1940 Transylvania was divided between Romania<br />
<strong>and</strong> Hungary. The city of Kolozsvár was given to Hungary. Anti-Jewish<br />
measures started <strong>and</strong> the “Új Kelet” newspaper was closed down.<br />
Kasztner moved to Budapest <strong>and</strong> became one of the prominent activists<br />
of the Zionist movement, ”Ihud Mapai” <strong>and</strong> of the Relief <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong><br />
Committee.<br />
Immediately after the Germans invaded Hungary on 19.3.1944, hard<br />
measures were imposed on the Jews <strong>and</strong> soon the deportations <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>Brothers</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Resistance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> 143
