Kertész Sári<br />

Born in Budapest on 18.12.1920<br />

Died on 4.1.2005 in Israel<br />

Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<br />

In 1939, together with her brother, Shimon, Sarah joined the hahshara in<br />

Izbék. Her brother died in a work accident in the nearby quarry. Sarah<br />

helped refugees, members of her movement that arrived in Budapest.<br />

She provided food <strong>and</strong> food coupons <strong>for</strong> them <strong>and</strong> even accommodated<br />

some of them in her house. She obtained authentic documents from the<br />

Population Registry.<br />

Sarah made aliya after the liberation of Hungary <strong>and</strong> joined Kibbutz<br />

Yassur. Later she left the kibbutz <strong>and</strong> lived in Ra’anana.<br />

Sas Dov<br />

Born in Kassa (Košice) in 1922<br />

Fell in 1944<br />

Member of “Hashomer Hatzair”<br />

Dov was a member of the ken’s leadership in his hometown. He was<br />

enlisted in a <strong>for</strong>ced labor unit <strong>and</strong> sent to Ukraine. He managed to cross<br />

the enemy lines <strong>and</strong> joined the Red Army. He fell in battle in 1944.<br />

Schamschula Katalin<br />

Herzfeld Rut<br />

Born in Budapest on 29.3.1926<br />

Died in 2003 in Australia<br />

Member of “Hanoar Hatzioni”<br />

In 1938 Katalin joined the “Hanoar Hatzioni” movement. Her family gave<br />

assistance to the first refugees from Pol<strong>and</strong>. After the Germans invaded<br />

Hungary on 19.3.1944, Katalin was taken to Tattersaal (Todt Lager). In<br />

Dinnyés Borgonpuszta, rescued by members of her movement <strong>and</strong><br />

arrived at the “Glass House” on Vadász Street. Under the name of<br />

Horváth Katalin, Katalin distributed <strong>for</strong>ged documents around the city.<br />

After the liberation she intended to make aliya <strong>and</strong> arrived in Romania<br />

but, due to an illness, she was <strong>for</strong>ced to return to Budapest. In 1949<br />

Katalin left Hungary. She lived in Sydney, Australia where she died.<br />
